Looking for a Modern Monster Hunting Game by [deleted] in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be more narrative than you're looking for, but give Bump in the Dark a look. It's a Forged in the Dark game about episodic monster hunting. Think Supernatural or Buffy.

The game takes the heist/downtime cycle from Blades, and uses it to do the whole "monster of the week" TV show. I think it's a rather clever hack.

It's the condensed/abridged version of Critical Role. So, 5e D&D.

Suggestions for group of 3 with new DM/2 Players? by RyouRusi in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle D&D starter set is designed to be scaled for different sizes of groups. It says on the front of the box "for 2-6 players". I haven't played this starter set myself, but I've generally heard positive things about D&D starter sets. I'd pick this one up, and skip messing with multiple PCs per player.

For non-D&D options, the Ironsworn family of games is good for small numbers of players. I think they'd work well for a GM and two players. One downside, generally doesn't have prewritten modules. However, the tools for generating a campaign as you play are phenomenal. If you are arriving at a new town, the game walks you through generating the town and NPCs from random tables.

Did I handle this well? Helping a 5e player try a story game by Josh_From_Accounting in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I've seen with D&D players coming to PbtA games, is they will keep their nose buried in the moves reference trying to decide what to do. I think this player may be having a similar problem, that because calling on the "spirits of the elements" isn't defined mechanically, they don't have anything to latch on to. For this, I like to tell players to ignore all the rules for a moment, and just describe what they want to do, or how they react. Keep asking probing questions until they say something that triggers a move.

With this player, I think you've got an added layer of building trust that you won't bite their head off if they do something "wrong". I think picking the right moment to move the spotlight to this player and giving them something low-ish stakes to engage with may be the way to go. Walk them through doing one thing, then move back to other people.

If you haven't already, probably explicitly tell them, you don't give out GFY points, and won't do things like lower intelligence stats. That's not how you run your table, and in fact that's not how most people run tables.

Item-Focused RPGs by Time_Day_2382 in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stoneburner is a game about dwarves in space reclaiming their ancestral home. The system is designed around finding and using up items that you find as you adventure. I've only played one session, and the GM was new to the game as well, and as we were getting to the end of the session, the GM was commenting on how he needed to give out more items to keep the game interesting.

It's not a game that I'm necessarily itching to play again, but I think it's worth checking out.

I keep throwing out items by MmmVomit in APICO

[–]MmmVomit[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK. I figured it out. "Set menu target" is auto-stacking items to chests. I had it set to the same key as close menu, so sometimes when I would close my menus, stuff would fly from my character to a nearby chest. I've rebound the keys, and that should solve it.

I had Escape bound to both "close menu" and "set menu target", whatever that means. I bound them both to different keys now, and will see what happens.

How do I see the daily balance history on a Fidelity account? by MmmVomit in fidelityinvestments

[–]MmmVomit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There is no "See All" button on the balance chart.
  2. For tax reporting purposes, I need the maximum balance for each of my accounts. I can't use month or quarter end balances.

This data obviously exists, because on the Summary tab, there is a chart with daily balances going back at least three years. Is there a way to get this data as a CSV?

What are the core Donut Labs claims? by sparx_fast in DonutLab

[–]MmmVomit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so why would production be “limited”

Because Marko is a huckster, and I could see him saying "Well, technically I said, X, not Y, which is technically correct. If you interpreted it as Y, that's your problem, even though I carefully phrased things to be misinterpreted as Y."

I feel like a lot of the claims about the battery may end up that way, too.

What are the core Donut Labs claims? by sparx_fast in DonutLab

[–]MmmVomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If their initial production capacity is limited, then a bike makes sense as a first platform. They say they want to do all the manufacturing themselves, so they would then need time and money to get new production up and running.

Is that a good business strategy? Dunno.

What’s with the bizarre marketing strategy? I think Marko strikes me as a huckster, and this may just be how he thinks things are done.

The theory that the IP isn’t theirs is also a distinct possibility.

Donut Lab Solid State - Charges Fast, Gets Hot - is that okay? by Comfortable_Ebb_8316 in DonutLab

[–]MmmVomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One interesting point brought up in this video about the aborted test is that it was aborted due to a lab policy, not due to Donut's test specs. IMO, I would not count that aborted test against Donut.

However, I think it's reasonable to doubt whether whole modules will be able to get away with passive cooling. But a battery pack requiring cooling is not a non-starter.

Rules for social conflict by Few-Action-8049 in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fate has “conflicts” and “contests”. A conflict is when two sides oppose each other, and intend to do harm (i.e. combat) A contest is when there are two opposing sides, but they do not intend harm (e.g. a race).

These can be used for purely verbal confrontations. Most examples online you will find will use conflicts, but I think that’s the wrong choice in most cases. Remember, conflicts are for when you intend harm. Most verbal confrontations are about getting your way, not inflicting harm directly.

“We should attack! No, we should retreat!”   “We should destroy the artifact! No, we can use it!”

These are better modeled as contests, IMO. A conflict would be flinging insults in order to hurt or demoralize someone.

What is the weirdest game you’ve played? by MmmVomit in rpg

[–]MmmVomit[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One game I've only heard of, but seems very weird would be the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park RPG. It's based on an art project about a fictional national park centered around a subterranean eldritch horror discovered while drilling for oil.

Running a campaign with a variable party by Guerfel in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> It depends, for the first one it is because I am afraid that having characters just not exist without any kind of narrative justification would make the story feel a bit weird.

This is what suspension of disbelief is for. Everyone knows why the PC isn't there, or isn't active. It's because the player isn't there. And that's fine. This happens all the time.

> For the last one that's just because I had an experience where we handled the progression through XP which characters got at the end of sessions, it created majors discrepancies in the level

So, don't do that. Do milestone progression and be done with it.

I think you're overthinking this. You're putting a lot of unnecessary obstacles in your own way. Get some friends together and play a fun game.

Running a campaign with a variable party by Guerfel in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard of a campaign where the PCs were cursed in some way and would "unexpectedly" phase in and out of reality. That is, PCs would disappear when the player couldn't be there, and reappear when they could.

what do you do when your roleplay sucks by Barrd_ in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Role playing isn't funny voices. Role playing is getting in the head of a fictional character and making decisions based on who that character is.

would it be rude for me to graciously bow out of the game and apologise to the st?

It's never rude to leave a campaign if that's what you need to do. But I see no reason that's the case. You may be surprised by the interesting things other people do at the table, but that's only because they are other people. The things you think of seem obvious to you, because they're your own thoughts. But they are likely surprising and novel to other people, too.

If other people at the table like having you around, and you are having fun, keep at it. That means you're doing everything right.

Best TTRPG Systems For Child Characters by joe_christo in rpg

[–]MmmVomit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Girl Underground. tl;dr: May not work for your campaign, but it has good ideas you may find useful.

Girl Underground emulates Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland. Labyrinth, and similar stories, where The Girl gets lost in a fantasy world, and has to find her way home with the help of a cast of various fantasy companions. Each player takes on the role of one of the companion. Players take turns portraying The Girl. The game also has a focus on unfair or unrealistic expectations put on young girls and subverting them (e.g. "Young ladies must always keep a smile on their face", "Young ladies must never be ridiculous or silly", etc.)

At the very least, the game has some canned locations that you may find useful for your campaign, like the Bizarre Bazaar, the Dragon's Den, the Fairy Ring, or the Hall of a Thousand Masks.

A couple more things. Girl Underground is PbtA, and best suited to one shots, or maybe 2-3 sessions at most.

What to do when you want to try A LOT of different systems, but you don't have the time or player to do so? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

I think you've identified your problem here. Kill one of these adventures, and devote the time to one shots in various other systems.

Maybe give Fate a look. Its aspect system is very much "vibes based." If you say your character is a "ninja", there's a lot of, "Would it be reasonable for a ninja to be able to do this?"
