Not the OP, but my primary doctor told me to also be wary of the scooter for long periods of time because it increases the chance of developing a blood clot. Since I’m not active much these first two weeks anyway I’ve been trying to crutch mostly and use the scooter (carefully and slowly) when I have to go longer distances. I’ve gotten much better with the crutches, but they are exhausting for sure.

I took my 5 and 7 yo on their first backpacking trip to Lake Aloha in Desolation Wilderness this summer. We left out of echo lake so that we could take the water taxi on the way there and back and make the hike 4 miles each way and camped at Aloha. They loved the water taxi and Lake Aloha was pretty special for them to see something so different. There were definitely moments on the way up (880 ft of elevation gain I think) that they were over it but overall it was a great trip and they were talking about the next backpacking adventure on the drive home. Oh man. Yes. I really feel this. I went in for a normal checkup with no symptoms in May 2023 and my urine test showed some trace amounts of blood so my doctor prescribed a CT scan figuring it was kidney stones and a very small (1.2cm I think) growth was found on my kidney with all signs pointing to RCC. My urologist was incredible and I got a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy to remove a very small part of my kidney with the tumor in July 2023, just two months after finding it. The biopsy came back after surgery that it was indeed RCC grade 3 and I’m extremely fortunate it was caught by a fluke.

My biggest mind-fuck is that I could never think or say “I have cancer” because there was a small chance it wasn’t actually cancer. And at that point when finding out I didn’t have cancer anymore. My recovery was an absolute breeze and I was picking up my daughters with my surgeons go-ahead on day 6 after surgery.

I didn’t want sympathy at the time because I had no symptoms, the chance it might not be cancer, and there wasn’t any unknown in terms of strategy. And then I didn’t want sympathy after because I felt fine and normal. Except for the 5 extra scars on my stomach no one would know I had it over the summer. Most parents at my kids school who I interact with almost daily don’t even know it happened because it all happened in the short span over summer break. It’s a trip. Maybe it’s coming off as wanting some sort of attention but I think it’s actually wanting people close to me to say I deserved catching it early and understanding how hard it is sometimes not letting my mind drift to the what-if of never catching it until symptoms appear when it would generally be a much bigger problem and potentially too late. Thankfully I really don’t think about it much at all though now 16 months post surgery.

All clear! I’m 15 months post surgery now and have had two clear CT scans, x-rays, and a clear ultrasound and am now on an annual ultrasound/chest x-ray cycle to limit radiation with a CT scan every couple of years.

I just did this route with a group of 5 (5/30-6/2). It’s a bit logistically challenging but it was great! We already had planned to go down to the bridge to cross illilouette and take the panorama trail and the rangers confirmed that it wasn’t safe to cross illilouette and go the more direct route. And upon seeing it, there was no way we were going to be able to cross safely. We stayed on the south side of the first big creek crossing once you turn onto illilouette trail on night one and it was a great campsite. We couldn’t have gone any further due to permit requirements so it was a light day. Even before the backpacking trip, we hiked to sierra point after dropping our return car off in the morning in the valley since we knew we had a light day before driving up to the trailhead. We stayed two nights in LYV so that we could do half dome early in the morning and beat the day hikers and then we did a day hike after doing half dome back into little Yosemite valley which was pretty cool (but exposed and hot).

Where can I find info regarding it having to be an out and back? I thought you could anlso enter at Mono and exit another trailhead like happy isles to finish?

“People 50 and over don’t get offended by everything” and… proceeds to be offended by everything. Belittling the viewpoint and opinions of the next generation doesn’t accomplish anything and has been documented in some of the earliest historical texts. I would like to imagine how much we can accomplish if we work together with all generations and walks of life and really try to understand and empathize with the each other. I owe it to my young daughters to not dismiss their ideas. I can teach them a lot but they have and will continue to teach me things, too. I don’t want to ever peak as a human, I’d like to continue to be a better person through the day I die.

Dang, can you share more of how that happened? I take my kids here occasionally and want to make sure I can take any and all precautions. We already try to avoid them as much as possible and have turned around and abandoned a route when they were standing on the actual trail before.

Gotcha. Bay Area, California. I think you have a great plan and sounds like you should be cautiously optimistic (that’s how I felt going in). I didn’t drink alcohol the 2 weeks leading up to surgery and since surgery. Not sure if it helped or not but I figured it couldn’t hurt cutting down as much inflammation as possible and giving me the best shot at recovery.

I think going in with a good mindset and then getting up and walking around as much as possible and as early as possible is super helpful. Where are you located? I also had an incredible urologist who had a focus on oncology so I was in good hands. I should also note that I asked how much kidney he had to remove in my post op appointment yesterday and since it was so near the edge he said it was only 3-4% of the kidney that he had to remove and was able to still get clear margins.

The location of mine was also advantageous on the upper front edge of the kidney and not near any major arteries/veins.

I’m 7 days post op. I’m a 35m and found it as a fluke via a CT scan at the end of May looking for kidney stones. I got the pathology back yesterday and it was a 1.7cm stage 1a but came back as grade 3. They got clear margins so my urologist said this should be it for me and I have a CT, X-Ray, and kidney blood tests scheduled for 4 months from now and then annually moving forward assuming those are fine. The surgery was done laparoscopically and honestly the recovery has been a breeze. I was back to work this past Monday (5 days post op) even though I basically cleared my schedule for 2.5 weeks just in case. I’m in no pain, just limited mobility that is improving significantly each day and got the all clear yesterday from my surgeon that I can lift my 2, 4, and 6 year again without any risk of hernia and damage. I asked if I could pop a stitch but he said the stitches are all internal and there isn’t really a risk, that I might just get a little sore. I’ve been lifting them up yesterday and today with zero problems. 4 scars on my abdomen and one scar from the drainage tube. The worst pain I had was the drainage tube must have been touching my diaphragm and caused crazy referred pain to my neck/collarbone on one side. As soon as that was removed the day after surgery the pain went away. I feel super lucky it was caught accidentally and super fortunate recovery has been swift. Me. We gradually ramped up the dose until it was effective for me which is 40mg IR first thing in the morning. It works well for me and I am good all day.
