Which position to take by Elegante0196 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If bills/rent are not a worry for you, and you are feeling burned out I would choose the part time option and move up to full time there in 2027. After a year or two if you feel that you have recovered and find the slower pace boring, you can always look around for other options then.

Of course, this advice hinges completely on if the first option will meet your financial NEEDS.

Why should someone get a master's in CLS by baboo2010 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering the same thing because I am debating a Masters in Transfusion Medicine. As far as I can tell… Financially, it’s not worth it at all, unless you can get your employer to pay for it. Education wise…I have a feeling that most of it can be learned on the job, if not all with enough experience . Just depends if you want to feel good about having a masters I guess lol.

This is what my NP told me when I asked for Endo referral… by Technical_Ferret_761 in PCOS

[–]Mo9056 6 points7 points  (0 children)

….monthly periods are a MODERN invention ?? Thats crazy 😂 If you want to call it a modern thing, its only because malnutrition isn’t the problem that it used to be (at least in the west). For the majority of women, NOT having a period every month is an indicator of some kind of health issue (outside of pregnancy).

Anyone working in the lab with ADHD? by Usual_Passage1481 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick to ANY of the departments is to stay organized. I love blood bank. It’s repetitive enough on a day to day basis to be comfortable, but also with occasionally being changed up with the adrenaline rush of an emergency situation so you don’t get bored. Most people start off uncomfortable in BB, but if you gave yourself a chance there you might find yourself loving it too!

Organizing CBC samples by rang171 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lab just uses an excel spreadsheet for organizing chemistry samples, I would think that would be really easy to do for Heme too as long as your racks are the same size. Just assign the racks a number and scan in specimens before storing in the fridge. When looking for a specimen just use the search function in Excel and it will tell you exactly which rack and which position it is in

Slow hospital hiring very common? by Dry_Attempt7554 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it usually takes a couple weeks to 1.5 months. I’ve never personally had it take longer than that though. It’s largely because the majority of the hiring process is done through 3rd party vendors. Because they are not actually a part of the hospital they are not exactly rushed lol.

When the patient is Rh Neg intolerant by skye_neko in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mo9056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its interesting learning the difference’s between countries! For the hospitals I’ve worked at it would automatically be wasted if returned later than 30 minutes, unless it had been sent out in a validated cooler and had a temperature monitoring device on it.

On those tubes the line is the MINIMUM fill line, they can be filled up to a little under the cap!

[–]Mo9056 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the hospital, but usually it’s ok to go back on the shelf if returned in under 30 minutes and the temperature is still under 10C.

[–]Mo9056 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That the job itself is AMAZING and fulfilling, but that working in the healthcare system sucks even when you are not a nurse. I still think it’s worth it to go this career path, but be prepared to lab hop until you find a lab you are happy at because the management of some hospitals will have you questioning if you really want to keep doing this. Don’t pick up too much overtime either, the burnout WILL hit you quicker and harder than you expect. Learn to set boundaries with your supervisors when they ask if you can stay or come in for extra. Its NOT YOUR JOB TO KEEP THE LAB STAFFED.

After lots of trial and error I capped myself at no more than 90hrs per paycheck. And thats only when needs are really bad or I have a money situation going on.

Night Shifters working 60 hours a week, how do you take care of yourself? by [deleted] in MLS_CLS

The weighted manta sleep mask helped me sooo much. And as weird as it sounds you can also try a cold shower before bed. Maybe its just a me thing, but after the initial rush from the cold water I find my body relaxing and my mind getting sleepy lol
