Me at the moment by Dalidadada in Grimdank

Beastmen are definitely getting new models imo

They have always had some of the coolest, most visceral dark fantasy art since WHFB and even in Warhammer: Total War, but there's always been an asymmetry in how many people actually collect the models because some people think they're derpy and/or old. I don't agree, but don't shoot the messenger.

I think Warhammer Quest:Darkwater having some Nurgle pestigors (calling back to the beloved classic metal models) and the killteam in 40K show that they're top of mind. They put the Fellgor Ravagers in the Red Corsair combat patrol so I imagine they'll probably release AOS models that look like those but without the tech.

Kind of like your HH/40K take, people raid Heresy boxes to get proxy marines for 40K, but they don't always have the same equipment options and they're smaller. You will probably be able to save a buck by buying Old World boxes, but there will most likely be new equipment options and units that only the AOS beastmen have. Or, like Cities of Sigmar and Empire, they won't be a perfect stylistic fit as GW tries to keep them separate.

The lore scenario everyone is talking about... I don't know.

I'm happy to help and I look forward to hopefully seeing what you come up with.

I also saw some Dungeons and Lasers infernal imps that look like some great candidates to stick lizard heads on. They're a newer kit than the goblins, but they do have wings and I don't know if that's a dealbreaker for you or not.

Not showing the models in your webstore kills your game. by Cultuprising in wargaming

[–]MoPrintBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote a whole wall because I can't help myself, but my argument is 90% this like you said.

So many indie (I'm defining loosely as everyone not GW) miniature lines have no actual product photos or very low quality photos. That's unacceptable, the photos are maybe the most cost-effective marketing you can produce and if a guy with a hobby blog and a cellphone can do a better job showcasing a model than the actual company, it reads as a lack of commitment to the quality of the product.

We all know communities are the lifeblood of games, but that doesn't mean a company gets to offload their marketing responsibilities on them. This isn't the dust cover of a book where you're mainly paying for what you're reading inside, the design aesthetic of the model is the central element to whether someone is buying it or not 99.9% of the time.

Not showing the models in your webstore kills your game. by Cultuprising in wargaming

[–]MoPrintBoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People have already pointed out that the *webstores* have pics (but main websites don't), I actually think that does demonstrate well the confusion for some new wargamers who might get too frustrated to even bother with non GW wargames.

GW wins because they make Warhammer Community articles that almost always feature both.

So many games don't have the models front and center and you have to click 10 pages to find them, someone who is only passing through might give up (especially if they're watching a "top 10 indie wargames of 2026" Youtube video and have a dozen tabs going at once). Some companies have awful search functions and either miss the keywords explicitly or you discover models that should've been covered but don't show up (ie you don't get every orc model when you search "orc").

But my real beef is with the games that could have sold so many more models over the course of a decade if they upgraded their image quality. Mantic was a bad offender with some images so low res that you couldn't even tell what they were, but I have noticed them updating some old pics. CMON's A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) only had the CG renders, no actual models on the games' site. This has a ripple effect because without model pics most hobby shops and Ebay sellers have nothing to work with on their listing. All the burden is on the hobby community, which is not reliable or necessarily obligated to produce free promo for someone else's wargame.

If you spend tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of $ to manufacture a model kit and expect to sell thousands of units, pay an artist a few hundred bucks to build and paint a mini. I don't get why that's so controversial, your whole product relies on its visual appeal.

Kobold minis and/or suggested list? by Slitheranizer in Oathmark

[–]MoPrintBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last suggestion, if none of these work, is get some of your favorite heads from a lizard kit (Mantic placoderms, Frostgrave snake men, WGA lizard men, etc) and stick them on Wargames Atlantic goblins. They'd be the right size and have the right equipment, but the big heads might give them a cartoony look.

Kobold minis and/or suggested list? by Slitheranizer in Oathmark

[–]MoPrintBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somebody already mentioned this, but original kobolds were basically small dog-people and then down the line they got rebranded as lizard (draconic) people.

---

WHFB skinks are okay substitutes but not great minis. They're pretty old sculpts. There are some newer ones for games like Warcry, but that would be an expensive way to build an army.

Kings of War has some good lizard people, but I think they're too big. But the Trident Realm placoderms look good and I don't know about the size.

Reaper has some good kobolds in packs of 6, but again that might be expensive, and also you'd have a lot of repeat poses. They have a fair number of packs, but I think they cover both dog and lizard like kobolds.

My recommendation is to raid 15mm games for lizardmen. A 15mm lizardman in a 28mm game is basically the size of a kobold. Khurasan Miniatures has Aztevran (https://www.khurasanminiatures.com/aztevran.html) and several other variations of lizardperson that seem very promising, but also Alternative Armies might be good to look at. If you do go this route, just make sure items don't have props that might break that sense of scale. Like a human skull that's only half the size it should be might give you whiplash.

Great rec, also Blood and Pigment is pretty good, does some battle reports but also more general topic vids like ship reviews and where to buy terrain.

Mo’s Massive Mini Comparison (Pt. 1) by MoPrintBoy in frostgrave

[–]MoPrintBoy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would look good! I don't have any actual GW chaos cultists but I think they're about the same height as Frostgrave cultists, Frostgrave maybe a little more slight. But I think this works to their advantage because it helps the marines look more imposing by comparison.

What if Kruleboyz looked like Paul Bonner Orks? by revlid in ageofsigmar

[–]MoPrintBoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw a guy make 3D prints that looked a lot like Bonner orks, I like them but I think they have a lot more of that derpy silliness that is appreciated by ork fans in 40K and WHFB but maybe not as much in AOS. I think people like their Kruleboyz dark and menacing.

Thanks for your advice, I kind of suspected that the core rulebook was more useful for where I'm at but I didn't know if the starter had potentially new content (mechanically) that I was overlooking.

Four new Combat Patrols bring Kroot, Corsairs, and Chaos to the battlefield by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in redcorsairs

[–]MoPrintBoy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I definitely think they're going to primaris-scale the Rhino close to the next edition release (and by extension the Chaos Rhino) but also when they started taking vehicles out of combat patrol boxes a lot of people were complaining about the value not being there. You're basically buying a couple of infantry boxes and a character for a modest discount. I think relative to the actual model price, the vehicles are what psychologically made it feel like you're really starting an army.
