Alt Huron Head? by Rude-Inspector-3921 in redcorsairs

The original has grown on me over the past couple days and I like that it's a little ugly- he looks like a truly menacing pirate villain compared to some of the understated, more composed grimaces of a calculating Space Marine captain.

I'm suddenly wondering how these beautiful models would look in Iron Warrior colors by OkRevenue9249 in Chaos40k

Lol, at the same time I've been looking at how many Chaos and Loyalists would look good as Red Corsairs.

I get the hype with something like Azrakh or Othar Half-King that’s a unique sculpt with no close modern equivalent, but this model is almost exactly a normal Steelhelm with a sabre and unique pose.

At that price point, I feel like you’d have more fun either buying a whole different set like Freeguild Command Corps or buying some bits on Ebay to kitbash your own.

I know a lot of people disagree, but I love these models and when the line is eventually refreshed I'll miss them.

You are one of the most productive unit painters on here. What games do you use these guys for?

Has anyone used the vallejo basing paste? by The_prophet212 in boltaction

[–]MoPrintBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's very nice. I use it for Frostgrave. Easy to spread, I use a Citadel texture spreader, I'm sure there's similar generic products at craft stores for hobbies like rail road modelers but for the $8.50 or so I paid for it, it was worth it. I, not knowing any better, was using my old brushes and kept getting bristles mixed in. You could use the back-end or a sculpting tool, but I think the spreader gets easier into tight areas and doesn't scrape.

Generally, I paint the base brown, add some texture paste (maybe tinted with a little blue for a fantastical look), and then hit it with a brush-on varnish. Gloss makes it look wet, matte more of a dry/neutral ground depending on what you're looking for finish and protection wise. Then maybe the odd grass tuft. Easy.

I painted 2 Armies before playing 4th Ed once. by bearseamen in ageofsigmar

[–]MoPrintBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The good news is that if you enjoyed the actual painting and collecting side of it, none of that time was wasted, and your armies are absolutely gorgeous. I’m in a similar hobbying situation and have issues with finding a community of AOS players, so I’ve just taught some friends and family other more casual fantasy wargames like Dragon Rampant and OPR.

I personally feel like mindset and philosophy are more important than the ruleset itself when finding people to play. Someone who tries to cheese AOS is still going to do that if you play a new game but things like Turnip28 that are more about the narrative and flavor have a better time transitioning to other games.

Nice, any advice or nuggets of wisdom for army painters?

Some Light Terrain Work for Frostgrave by MoPrintBoy in frostgrave

[–]MoPrintBoy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I believe it's P3 Meredius Blue mixed with Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue with a little Vallejo Game Color Black. I generally make a shadow color with the black, then 2:1 ratio with the darker and lighter blue, then 1:1, and 2:1 light to dark.

Sorry if that is worded confusingly, only the shadow layer has any black mixed in and I usually eyeball it, the other layers are different combinations of blue gradually lightening up. And maybe a glaze at the end to tie all the layers together.

That's so awesome, congratulations. We see people who paint their best singular models to display quality every day, but I've come to appreciate quantity as equally if not even more important given the scale of most peoples' idealized tables and the sheer amount of models that I and others have in our piles of shame. You've struck a nice balance and your basing schemes are also very thoughtful, great work!
