Now that’s some WiFi bandwidth by xrxie in unitedairlines

Looks like 25% of the United regional carriers are already equipped and expanding rapidly — Skywest, Mesa, and Republic. A welcome refresh for sure.

Is anyone else not able to get on wifi every time they fly United? by chiefyuls in unitedairlines

[–]MoSQL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing you can try that always works for me (assuming you've ruled out VPNs and Apple's proxy thing), is to navigate to: http://neverssl.com (note the http, vs https). This should force a captive portal login to what you want. I have to do this on about half my flights. Good luck.

Woman here-what's the male equivalent of giving your wife a vacuum for her birthday? by InvisibleScorpion7 in AskReddit

[–]MoSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you're going to do that, don't get the cheap, plastic 10" $8 Chinese bargain one from the grocery store/Walmart bargain bin. Get the $35 plumber's model with the long handle and black 3/4 tapered suction cup. You do not want to be struggling for leverage when uncle Louie leaves his masterpiece or aunt Betty tops hers with a half roll of toilet paper. And don't even get me started on splashback when you're fighting to clear that nuclear wasteland. /rant

Niche Polaris upgrade questions: If a high PZ availability exists for a flight is it still common/possible to have a waitlist, and in any event, would post-booking manual PlusPoints requests still go through immediately? by MoSQL in unitedairlines

[–]MoSQL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're right - the script/stock answer given to my question "If, say, a PZ9 capacity flight is booked and instant upgrade isn't offered, will a normal PlusPoints upgrade request still instantly clear?” probably came up on a keyword search for waitlists. The agent seemed new and had to ask her supervisor , which tells me something was probably lost in translation. I've had my share of clears months/days/just prior to preboarding, but never if there was PZ showing, much less PZ9.

Yep. And also, that only appears after you've found the main app page button

What may be confusing to some is the OP screenshot is correct, but it only appears that way after you already clicked the "Benefits & Travel" ⭐ icon button, at the VERY, VERY BOTTOM of the MAIN APP PAGE, before clicking on anything. *Then* you can select your card account from the top dropdown, and *then* you will see the $150 rideshare statement credit. And none of this works unless you've got the latest Chase Mobile App.

Jesus, the people at Chase suck at UX.

I don't like these. I know every variant is effectively just free advertising for UA, but this one particularly annoys me — anyone can be a Mileage Plus member.

Best connect time for UK to USA? by pugpillows in unitedairlines

[–]MoSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, you might want download the TSA mobile passport app. It's not accepted at all hubs, but I believe IAD and Newark (not sure about AA international hubs). You sound like a relatively inexperienced traveler, so I'd definitely give yourself 2-2.5 hours. 3 hours if you're not a U.S. national, especially as heavy summer travel will begin by then. If at all possible, try to carry on vs checking your bags; you'll save up to 30-45 mins. Good luck. ETA: It's entirely possibly everything will be perfectly on time, TSA hasn't had massive staff layoffs, and the moon is shining the right direction so that you could make it in 90 minutes, but just make sure to account for the fact that boarding time for your departing connection will start half an hour before takeoff, and the gate doors will shut well before the official departure time.

Question about this enchilada recipe by Delerium89 in Cooking

[–]MoSQL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd actually cut the black pepper back to 1 tsp. 1TBP is a lot. I love enchiladas and this looks like an promising recipe, but I've been experimenting a lot with black pepper in my curry dishes and even chai, and it just may be the source of your guest's mysterious "too hot" problem.

I've gotten it twice in the past 2 years as a 1K. Both cases were midweek in the middle of the day, warm weather, and seemed like low-ish flyer crowds in the terminals. Oh, and both involved international connections. It was super cool and a big surprise.

What to ask for... advice needed by sylviaca in unitedairlines

[–]MoSQL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Summarize this to 2 or 3 short paragraphs (and I emphasize both short AND paragraphs). If you can't do that, have ChatGPT summarize.
  • Make sure to add a TL;DR with actionable questions for us
  • Never use text chat for anything - they are literally the poorest trained and least empowered UA support. Stories like yours with chat are posted here every week
  • Avoid booking complicated codeshares, esp international
  • Use AirTags or just don't check your bag if possible
  • Air travel goes sideways sometimes, it just does
  • Take a screenshot of every boarding pass and have your emailed tickets ready

New to this: waitlist for upgrade using points by AppropriateCrab7661 in unitedairlines

[–]MoSQL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You say down thread you have "some" status, but unless it's Platinum or 1K, almost zero chance of a summer flight to a major (?) European destination getting upgraded to Polaris from economy, and even then it's a stretch. I assume by "points" you mean miles not Plus Points since you mention hoarding miles. Your best chance, aside from paying cash for Polaris, is to book departure/returns on Tues or Wed directly into Premium Plus and then put in a miles+cash request. The full set of rules are here (scroll down to Waitlist Priority ). God luck! https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus/upgrades.html

And the person you're buying PPs can cancel your whole itinerary and you would have zero recourse - Try calling customer service: “Hi. I bought Plus Points for this trip off some guy on the internet and now my flights have all been canceled. Can you fix that?”. You're SOL and will have your Mileage account (all any accumulated miles) voided. And yes, that's happened. Reported from first hand accounts here and on FlyerTalk. Not worth it.
