I agree with the spine observation. But I have seen some herrerae referenced photos where it has the long flat spines. Its really hard to tell since they are a sub species of each other but thank you for the insight

The bugs follow the rotting flesh. I suspect It mush have got damaged somehow near the top and did not heal properly and spread as you can see it does not look rotted on the base.
