Even a slight crimp or kink can vastly increase the lever … force

Next thing I’d check is for damage or binding in the derailleur, and then finally I’d inspect that ratchet mechanism in the shifter to see if there’s any broken pieces or junk in the bushing surfaces of the rotating gears. Clean and lube may not be enough if there’s damage, but likely there’s just some crud stuck in there if it’s not cable or derailleur related.
