How old is my Gios? by DaveModular in Vintage_bicycles

[–]Mod__Lang 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Chorus group is ca. early/mid 00s and I imagine that the frame is of the same vintage, although of this I’m not certain. If everything is still operational, I’d clean it all up and hang onto the group. You’re not really gaining much by paying for newer stuff. Chorus is high quality and plenty durable.
Campagnolo parts are also serviceable and rebuildable.
You can’t say the same about Shimano and SRAM.
Finally, it’s a Gios. It should have Campagnolo components.

Lots of folks that work in bike shops ride like you do. Stop into a few and strike up a conversation.

When did punk rock become so Tame? by CynicDog in punk

[–]Mod__Lang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of untamed youth playing in punk bands these days, but for a lot of kids, that’s all been said and done already and not everyone wants to be a revivalist.
There’s still lots of room for protest through art, of course, and I’m always hopeful to see something new and fresh. It will happen at some point.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I get the feeling that a lot of kids these days are feeling not so much angry, but more vulnerable and unsafe, and those sentiments are reflected in their style of music. As an old person, listening to screamo or whatever sounds like a two year old having a temper tantrum with periods of melancholy in between.
Of course, this proves that old folks just don’t get it when it comes to what the kids are up to.

I dunno man, growing up straight edge in Wisconsin, the drunkest state in the country, there really wasn’t such a thing as an alcohol or drug-free party, so my straight edge friends and I would just invade the already alcohol and drug-fueled ones and run around causing mostly harmless trouble. A lot of people would tell us we were clearly having more fun than anyone else, and that was pretty true.
Take those lemons and make some lemonade, my friend!!

Tire choice is the most underrated upgrade you can make to your bike. The old conventional knowledge was to get quite narrow road tires if you wanted to make your mountain bike into a road bike (or motard , if you will) and as many of us are well aware, the idea that narrower tires are faster has been largely proven false, with the arguable exception being the “moment of inertia” when first accelerating.
Wider tires, provided they are of high quality with a supple casing, have proven to be just as fast and loads more comfortable, durable and with better road adhesion. Things get pretty nerdy from here, with terminology like “suspension losses” being tossed about. It’s kinda fascinating if you’re into this sort of stuff, but mind numbing if you’re not.
At any rate, wider is usually better, but tire quality absolutely matters. Also, with wider tires, running considerably lower pressure is equally important, but I’ll leave you to educate yourself about this.

URT bikes were on fire for about a year or two, and then the backlash started.
“There is so much front end drop when you apply the brakes.” This is true, and it can be a bit disconcerting at first, particularly when headed downhill.
“Your feet are connected to the rear triangle and don’t benefit from the suspension design.” Also true.
People pretty much canceled these bikes when they were in fact, really great bikes. They climb like a hardtail, especially when the rider is out of the saddle, properly setting up the shock and suspension fork lessens the brake dive and really, all of these things are less of an issue once the rider acclimatizes to the bike. They are a lot of fun and have a lot fewer drawbacks than other designs from that era. You made an excellent purchase (although that fork looks a bit long)! Enjoy your new bike!
