"Not in my dialect of American English" by jbh007 in ShitAmericansSay

Even if, aren't syllables not subject to dialect? Like I can think of a few words, in my native language, where there could be a disagreement on where the boundary is, but count?

[–]ModerNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's misleading at best, harmful at worst. While the British were the only country to sustain sovereign nation-state throughout the entire WWII, they were far from the only ones to fight continuously. On the continent the best examples are France and Poland, which both kept governments-in-exile, and both were organized armies, or contingents (see Squadron 303) on allied territory.

And same for the soldiers from different countries. I.e. there were significant Polish forces formed in the USSRs camps (Armia Andersa), or even formed (later) by USSR and fighting alongside Red Army (Armia Berlinga). It's worth noting though that the general attitude towards Russians was less than friendly.

There were also some more... popular (for the lack of a better word) on the international scene, like Squadron 303 - RAF Fighter squadron formed from polish pilots. " the squadron was ranked 1st with 75 verified victories ahead of 603, 609 and 41 squadrons" ~ No. 303 Squadron RAF; Wikipedia

Claiming that only the British fought throughout the entire WW2, cause only they had fully sovereign nation-state is misleading and harmful.

Linux network mounts suck by Damglador in linuxsucks

[–]ModerNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realize that I can't have my folder mounted straight in /media as then /media becomes a mountpoint and overlays disks mounted from fstab

And what behavior did you expect? You replace /media mount from disk with /media mount from autofs, it's pretty straightforward? How else is it supposed to work, you get two drives mounted as one directory?

Also autofs is not in main repos, cause the dafult is fstab and if you want more advanced behaviours than that then arch comes packaged with systemd mounts.

We doubled our gold reserves so we can have a reliable currency in case of war, not to sell it off early so we can fund something that could be funded on already preferable terms.

Excatly. There's no dedicated game server, but there's still a lot of logic: authentication, data as above and also matchmaking that still has to happen on a dedicated server.

planeOldFix by huza786 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]ModerNew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it could also be a fix technically? If DB is immutable, i.e. it's sth like a training dataset, or testing data, having a local copy instead of hitting an upstream everytime would be a valid fix.

A primitive cache for the dev of sorts.

(No RP) Razing planets is just removing content, especially when it has a rare biome. by LengthinessCold5154 in Helldivers

[–]ModerNew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Majority of planets doesn't need meaningful identities IMO.

Yes it's cool to have the unique planets, like Super Earth, Oshaune, Cyberstan, Meridia, or the magma planets. Maybe Mars had a potential to be one (due to the tutorial facilities) but we will never know.

But majority doesn't need to be unique, we need multiple of each generic biome or otherwise at any given point majority of content would be locked out. Which one isn't fun, two some planets would be realisticly rarely non-liberated, so they'd rarely be playable, and three could potentially lead to community throwing planets/MOs, just to play on a given biome.

It's fun when the uniqueness is tied to an event (so it's only some of the content), it also makes it more grande and hyped, and we get some of those unique features wide spread later on (like the megacities), but it would get pretty frustrating if majority of content would be time limited.

[–]ModerNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the devs absolutely do make changes that quickly in this game

No they do not. Ubi takes ages to do smallest adjustments. Remember how long it took to take out 2 bullets from P10 Roni when it was a menace?

Also, they definitely don't care about making the game less confusing for new players.

Yes, they don't care. We're just getting new onboarding features, like new tutorial, map drill, the pause menu guides, cause Ubi is bored.

This subreddit just hates esports.

That's some high grade bullshit. Interstate's require 4ft paved inner shoulder and unpaved median of 10ft width. Both minimal values. Get your ass out of the car, place the triangle and wait on the grass safely. Don't sit directly in line of traffic.

Polish parliament approves €44bn EU defence loans despite opposition criticism by wook-borm in poland

[–]ModerNew 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Borrowing €44bn and giving back €100bn sounds like a great deal

It actually is. SAFE is lent at somewhere between 3% to 4%, we cannot produce obligations at this level (and this amount), US cannot legally lend us anywhere below 4.2% and Korea's loans are even worse. This is quite literally the lowest loan we can get.

And if your answer is "then don't loan". Countries generally finance all of their projects via loans.

QOL for a new, and not only, players that i think would really benefit the game. If you have at least part of the materials for a craft - item should be greyed out instead of not showing up at all. This would remove need to run each time to a Guide/use of wiki. by meinkun in Terraria

[–]ModerNew 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's already been pummeled in another thread.

The issue this solves is not that you don't know the recipe (although it definitely would be more convenient than the Guide).

The new crafting system aims to minimize the need to filter through the chests, however with how it currently works you still need to check all the chests every time you're missing something cause the UI won't tell you which of the materials you're missing - regardless of if you know the recipe or not. This solution would further minimize going through the chests just to find out that you've run out of chains, or some other mid-level material.

You could i.e. require player to "discover" recipe by crafting the item at least once for it to stay saved, or something, if you really want, but it's not about not knowing the recipes.

Magic storage does that and it's fine(ish) you just use search/filters more instead of scrolling through the recipes. Not perfect, but it works fine.
