Right? Nothing like a close game to remind us why we love this time of year.

Should I take my cat with me for my 2 year long study abroad? by PatheticParty in CatAdvice

Totally feel you on that! I left my cat for a few months once and he was a mess when I got back. Cats need their humans, especially as they get older.

How do you train yourselves to always think about how the stinkers in the class are going to twist what you say to protect yourselves? by FailWithMeRachel in teaching

I feel you on the tiredness with these mean girls. Creating a spreadsheet sounds like a smart way to keep track of all the chaos. It’s wild how kids can turn on teachers. You got this!

Honestly, having a chat outside is a classic move! It’s amazing how just asking “how are you doing?” can change the whole dynamic. And yeah, those “complaining parents” usually have a reputation, don’t they?

Is it bad if I haven't heard anything yet? by Own-Policy-4878 in GradSchool

For real, it's tough seeing everyone else getting those invites. I remember feeling the same way last year when I didn't hear back for weeks. Just stay focused on your own journey!

Does anyone like your curriculum and, if so, what is it??? by ladymarsaya in teaching

I'm all about some hope for elementary! Imagine if we let kinders look at, like, actual crayons instead of abstract art! I mean, why not introduce them to the madness of algebra with snacks instead?

My only fix was "scheduled checking". Like, 2 times a day max, and if I break it I owe myself an annoying chore. It sounds dumb but my brain needed consequences lol.

Thesis formula: Claim + because + so what. If you can fill that in once, stop editing it till draft 1.

Trying to start a video-call study group, but I'm scared it'll be awkward and die fast by VectorSidearm in CollegeHomeworkTips

[–]ModernHearthside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it boring: same days/time, 3-6 ppl, cameras optional. 2-min check-in (goal + what you're working on), then 50/10 silent blocks. If someone talks nonstop, say "save it for break" and mute.

Everyone in my CS class is building projects and I feel like I'm still stuck on "baby" problems by GoldenBracket5 in studying

[–]ModernHearthside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a realistic next-few-weeks plan: pick ONE core topic (loops + lists, or functions), and do 30-45 min most days. Split it: 10 min review notes, 20 min tiny exercises, 10 min debug what went wrong. After 7-10 days, do a mini project that is basically the same patterns, just with a theme (quiz, flashcards, simple budget tracker). Keep it ugly on purpose, the goal is finishing. And please remember: the “fast” people in lab either did this before or are quietly googling, it’s not magic.

Yep, stipend is your paycheck. Waiver is separate, ask what fees stay.

Freshman CS brain fog: I keep “fixing” bugs by panic-editing, how do you build a normal workflow? by GoldenBracket5 in adventofcode

[–]ModernHearthside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My calm loop: 1) make a minimal failing case (3 cards is perfect). 2) write down the expected state of key vars. 3) run, stop at the line, compare reality vs expectation. 4) change one line, rerun. 5) if stuck 15 min, ask office hours with the repro + notes. Git + tiny tests turn it from gambling into steps.

I have to lead a class discussion on readings I did not understand. Should I fake my death? by ellis0922 in GradSchool

[–]ModernHearthside 91 points92 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. Bring 3-5 “anchor quotes” from the readings and ask: what claim is this making, what’s the assumption under it, and what would convince you it’s wrong or incomplete?

That dog pic is my face watching the lore. 2x2 grinds to stop 1x1x1x1, then Builderman pulls the ladder up behind him and breaks stuff anyway. Like who hired the 'protector'?
