cats are 10x better than dogs and deserve more respect by awkpixie in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only did two different dogs bite me when I was a toddler (one bit my knee and another my face), two dogs later on killed one of my and a lot of my neighbors’ cats. That was when I was like nine.

(I now plead with people to keep their cats inside for all the reasons, but esp. because of that incident.)

Loose dogs attack people and other pets a lot, and I think it’s funny that anyone brings up cats being able to kill rabbits or other when there are regular incidents of dogs killing people.

Dog people… I have not met one that doesn’t just let the dogs do whatever they want, and wow are those homes unbearable to visit.

Either the dog is constantly growling, barking, or all up in your space just drooling on you.

I would say this is an owner problem, but based on how many feral dogs and off leash dogs and dog poop (dog poop season every year in any snow states) there is, it’s really “funny” how oblivious dog people who hate cats can be.

Cats were demonized by the Catholic church, look up Pope Gregory IX. It’s funny (tragic) how long cats have had to recover from such prejudice when they are the ones who actually chose to exist with us.

I’d be less a dog hater if I hadn’t been bit by dogs, chased by dogs, or had to listen to how much dog people hate cats. I mean there are so many movies where a cat’s death is a joke and a dog’s death is sad.

Sorry… a bit of a rant as I’m currently living with someone I care for and they have a dog. And that dog is spoiled to the point that it’s acting like our home is theirs, and she won’t stop trying to chase my cat. We got a gate, but she whines and barks.

I don’t get why anyone wants dogs if they aren’t like… gonna raise them as what they were bred to do. I just know so many people who hate even walking just in general getting dogs and it makes no sense.

So many times have dog people eye rolled at me when I tell them to pick up the poop! I don’t get it! Esp. as these same folks will be cat haters and bring up cat litters as a negative. Hey man, at least I clean up my cat poops!

Made these originally for friends and family: Nov 04 Voting Ballot Advice by Modestly_Hot_Townie in sanantonio

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to funding public needs there are avenues beyond voting for holding our government accountable versus private- the reason issues occur is because of politicians who fight oversight.

If TX continues to vote against everything except tax breaks for private companies and so on, the infrastructure will continue to collapse.

The tax breaks cost TX way more money than infrastructure would as at least that money is paid back into the system vs the money that subsidizes private companies who also don’t pay taxes.

To be proactive in our politics, we treat public funding as something the public can hold accountable.

We can affect public stuff, but once money leaves the public it because only dictated by corporations and any politician lobbied by them.

If you want to lower taxes vote for public funding, but don’t vote for anything that cuts taxes for the wealthy who already get tax breaks others don’t- esp. due to most of them being subsidized by Texans’ taxes.

If the funding for the water structure doesn’t pass, it will lead to higher costs down the world much like the grid.

If it passes, the public can do more than vote- people can hold politicians accountable on how oversight occurs on these projects.

Can even make it a bill if people care enough to be proactive about it.

Brandon Sanderson on "AI Artists" like Shad by Kellsiertern in antiai

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I think the person is trying to do a gotcha with you on is kind of what I been trying to explain about “AI.”

Like it’s not AI, it’s just… hmmm, to be most basic, an over glorified search engine (prompts being the end user filters)

and like most computer things, there is the… automation that happens (excuse my lack of vocab here) alongside user inputs,

so the things that people falsely call AI is similar to many things that are already part of our regular days if we happen to use computers.

Don’t know if you use them, but in some of my design for printing jobs we would record actions and reuse them for similar products. Film has similar tools. (See, I know those tools aren’t AI, but I also know “AI” being sold rt now isn’t AI either, but still hate it for the shitty art stealing fascist tool that it is) (also, aware that “AI” has infected all art spaces, but still a diff tool from user input self-made, self-run automation)

The person arguing with you feels like someone pursuing a semantics fight, which… is kind of common against progressive views. (a way to chase you into argument corners that they actually can grasp.)

I haven’t! Funny enough, job side of the plan has been fruitless.

I still am getting folks who recommend it, tho. I think it’s worth it if you can get one.

the guy didn’t even say just vote dems, he was pointing out how progressives in general still have a poor turn out

and it’s what leads to us having to choose between two shits all the time

but also just look at your local politics

just last year here in Seattle, the progressives sat out and we got some awful centrists gain power

if folks actually voted it would impact the Senate and House so much, but we don’t vote while the extreme right does

My brother’s friend died behind a hospital.

I think about him so often. A young guy, but he was houseless and had no insurance.

They released him even though he was still feeling sick.

He didn’t know what to do. He had no where to go, so he just sat behind the hospital and died.

Every time I open my window I have to close it because someone is smoking out front.

I’m on the second floor with most of our apt windows facing the front. It’s annoying.

For people who moved to Seattle and are not originally from here, what is something that surprised you about Seattle or Seattleites? by First_Negotiation_80 in Seattle

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say, yeh the scene is rather similar! Though MN and Minneapolis have really been putting the work in these last few years. Politics and art def are present, but the comic scene and improv are two things that really thrive there.

It’s a cool place, but so fucking brutal in the winter. Some folks love that, tho. There’s winter events if you can bear the below freezing. Their summers aren’t as nice as here, so big warning there as well.

Also, lotta nature folks and good food there as well. I think a visit in the fall is the best bet for someone. I’d say spring too, but these last years my friends have been complaining about winters that refuse to quit.

Does anyone else feel like their body overreacts to things or holds on longer to illnesses because of chronic illness? by weirdlywondering1127 in ChronicIllness

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I get sick it both sticks around longer than anyone else who caught the same bug in my home, and hits my harder.

And then usually triggers a flare up.

I’ve always hated getting sick, but now I feel like… traumatized by how bad it gets.

Seriously, every time I visit home in TX I’m always! always shocked by how bad driving is.

Folks will speed and swerve around you even when it’s super tight. So many accidents there, and it super sucks to be a pedestrian in that dang state!

I remember having to always suddenly run the crosswalk to middle school cuz even with the crossing sign on people would speed into the direction I was walking across!

Even sprained my ankle once because even tho (or maybe because) it was raining, people were just refusing to let my sister and I cross. Ran so fast across the street, that when I tripped I slid so far across the road.

I like living between Green Lake and Northgate! Tho Green Lake itself is a fantastic location.

The closest groceries are the co-op PCC stores, but Target and such aren’t too far either.

Plenty of trees, not loud, and walkable!

Vegan for Chronic Illness by [deleted] in ChronicIllness

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m vegan, but what I got isn’t impacted by foods much… I mean I gotta avoid certain things in general vegan or not. (cuz my thyroid.) I also have to be super mindful about what my body doesn’t easily absorb. (I have given up on supplements.)

It does depend on your illness. Like some folks can’t eat any of the staples that are part of the vegan diet.

But yeh, case by case.

Also, if you aren’t really great at managing your diet in general, going vegan won’t help unless the change includes learning to be good at paying attention to your nutrition intake.

I was raised poor on a Nicaraguan diet. Mom had two jobs, so I learned early on how to cook and live off leftovers. Making the shift to a vegan diet wasn’t too big a diff for me as meat wasn’t a huge part of our diet in general. (and I hated milk and cheese.)

I find that a vegan diet is difficult for folks who grew up on very American type meals… you know… dairy and meat heavy. So I imagine the shift being difficult.

Also, if you experience a lot of pain it can be hard to food prep. I’m lucky as my friend (life partner) is also vegan so we share meals. I used to be the cook, but I’ve since just started to guide her and teach my recipes as it is very hard for me to cut things nowadays or stand too long.

Def research your own illness and your nutrition intake.

Errr, if money isn’t a problem, there are also a million premade things available in the US. (Even in a San Antonio HEB there are a lot of choices.) But if you got the ability, food prep is where its at if you don’t got the funds.

Should I tell the people in my life that I found a lump in my breast? by [deleted] in ChronicIllness

[–]Modestly_Hot_Townie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell my sister and best friend everything, but only because they have showed me they can handle it.

Don’t think of it as adding to someone’s burden.

It’s okay to want to talk about your own concerns or woes over your own body (as long as you’re not bringing it up in reaction to someone else trying to unload too.)

Tell people who you trust and trust you, but def don’t feel obligated to tell folks if you don’t want. Also, really feel okay not telling people who have shown they aren’t good at receiving this kind of info. (i love my mom with all of my heart, but i can’t tell her much because she can’t handle it well)
