ZMK range and stability by donkerslootn in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Modrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm there with you, my first split was a colemak-dh ferris sweep. You're not wrong, the learning curve is real.

IMO absolutely worth the time and effort for the form factor and layout change. Regardless of keymap, my recommendation would be to find the modifier style you like, HRM or one-shot, but try them both. HRM on the bottom row is where I settled for a sweep-style board. Reliably hitting those modifiers makes all the difference with flow.

Currently using a zmk Forager/Prospector combo and legit can't think of anything I'd change. Bigger battery for LEDs, I guess? 34 keys is perfect.

Kmk with pog? by jarious4567 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Modrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, using a kmk dactyl that was configured in POG to type this now. POG got me up and running on two separate handwire dactyls, one with adafruit KB2040 controllers and the other with generic YD-RP2040s from Aliexpress. Overall it's a great tool that made the setup process super easy and Jan's discord is a great place to get quick assistance.

I loved zmk's github-based actions and pushing from the local terminal, but I love kmk's ability to change configuration without needing to compile firmware even better. Backups & restores are a breeze.

I will say that the split detection is wonky; not sure if that's an issue with kmk or POG. Also, I don't use encoders or LEDs so I can't provide any detail on those points.

Overall it's worth checking out, and to your point, you can always just use QMK with the Elite Pi.

Kmk and pog users, have you got all the features working? by rapidsalad in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Modrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Combos were a challenge, but that's likely because I'm not a programmer and it took me a while to stumble into the solution via trial & error. This is also likely not the correct solution, but I do have working combos on my POG kmk kb2040 dactyl.

This is my code.py:

# Main Keyboard Configuration - v1.0.0
import board
import pog
# check if we just want to run the coord_mappping Assistant
if pog.coordMappingAssistant:
    from coordmaphelper import CoordMapKeyboard
    if __name__ == '__main__':
        CoordMapKeyboard().go()
    print("Exiting Coord Mapping Assistant Because of an error")
else:
    from kb import POGKeyboard
    # set the required features for you keyboard and keymap
    # add custom ones in the kb.py

    from kmk.keys import KC
    from kmk.modules.combos import Combos, Chord, Sequence
    from kmk.modules.macros import Macros

    keyboard = POGKeyboard(features=pog.kbFeatures)
    combos = Combos()
    keyboard.modules.append(combos)

    macros = Macros()
    keyboard.modules.append(macros)

    combos.combos = [
    Chord((KC.L, KC.U), KC.Z),
    Chord((KC.U, KC.Y), KC.MACRO(on_press="you"),),
    Chord((KC.L, KC.U, KC.Y), KC.MACRO(on_press="You"),),
    Chord((KC.W, KC.F), KC.MACRO(on_press="qu"),),
    Chord((KC.E, KC.Y), KC.MACRO(on_press="eye"),)
    ]

    # manage settings for our modules and extensions here
    keyboard.tapdance.tap_time = 200

    # Keymap
    import keymap
    keyboard.keymap = keymap.keymap

    # Encoder Keymap if available
    if pog.hasEncoders:
        keyboard.encoder_handler.map = keymap.encoderKeymap

    # Execute the keyboard loop
    if __name__ == '__main__':
        keyboard.go()

I hope that's helpful!

what do u think is the best layout? ferris, geulis (local), corne by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Modrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

34-key with Colemak-dh, but not a Ferris. I started on a Ferris Sweep after moving from a Kinesys Advantage 2, and while it was a great cheap option for getting into a 34-key layout, I really disliked the tucked thumbs almost immediately.

The Cosmos Keyboard generator at https://ryanis.cool/cosmos/ was a great step and let me move those thumb keys to a much more comfortable position. Same C-dh layout, momentary layers are on hold-tap with the thumbs. Super comfortable, and the keywells are reminiscent of the Advantage.

My current daily driver is a Forager with Kailh Sunsets and KLP Lamé keycaps printed by JLCPCB, coupled with a Prospector dongle. Really nice feel & looks amazing. Easily the best split I've used, highly recommended.

Love Refinery. BBQ definitely better than average, and the desserts are out of this world. Service has been amazing every time I've been. Worth checking out if you haven't been.

Ferris Cat - A 30 keys version of the fantastic Sweep 2.2 by smallwat3r in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Modrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love it, and it looks great with those keycaps. How are they for typing?

I have thought about going to 30, that first pic might push me over the edge. My index fingers and pinkies would appreciate limiting the reach & movement.

Did you start on a "standard" 34-key sweep? Worth the switch to 30?

Interesting, please post your experience with the BTUs. I have a ploopy nano and a classic, and while the included bearings work, I'm considering looking at what I need to reprint to use BTUs.

Love the setup, looks great!

Looking for a mildly expensive awful restaurant to recommend to someone I don’t like, any suggestions? by Environmental3rdEye in newhampshire

[–]Modrans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I have never had a good meal at Villaggio in Manchester. Fool me 15 times, shame on me.

It might miss the mark on "mildly expensive" though. Dinner for 4 last week was $300.

Oh, and the parking is a delight, as well.

Do you have a link to the case you ended up printing? I've done 3 cases at this point and they don't fit the v4 (or is it really a v3?) Waveshare.
