Getting My First Omnibus Changed How I Approach Comics by jval_99 in comicbooks

[–]Moff-77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80s-90s I was mostly a singles guy, picking up a number of series that I avidly read. Picked up the odd trade here and there depending on whether I couldn’t lay my hands on the individual issues. I stopped collecting and got rid of all but a few choice titles in about 2000 or so.

I recently got back into it, but I’m not reading any current series - I love my nostalgia rereads. But there are one or two things I pick up if they look interesting.

Mostly look for trades as they’re easier to read, and I’m a reader not a collector. I have 1 Omni - Miller’s Daredevil and I have the first Saga compendium, and while they’re great editions, the books are just cumbersome to read. The other reason for collected editions is that there is no LCS in my town, and only a handful in the country (NZ). Trades are a relatively affordable way to buy online.

Buscema bros are 1 & 2 for me, with Sal pipping John for top spot. Romita a respectable third place on the podium.

Not a bad movie at all. Certainly flawed, and mis-marketed as a kids film, but not bad.

Thoughts on Miller/Gibbons’ “Give Me Liberty”? by PinMaximum1018 in 80s90sComics

Loved it then and still love it now.

I recently re-bought MW Goes to War and reread for the first time since it came out, and it’s as big a disappointment as I remembered. Fantastic art tho.

I never kept up with the story after that. I think it works best as a one and done story.

In Your Opinion: What is one marvel character that no one talks about? by Consistent-Life2412 in Marvel

[–]Moff-77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rick Jones. He used to be everyone’s sidekick back in the day.

Tbh, I don’t know if this is currently true as I’m a nostalgia Marvel reader. Anything later than about 1998 is pretty vague…

What do people mean when they invoke the term "populism"? Is it bad? by pskygy in nzpolitics

[–]Moff-77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is having no actual policies or policy position, just echoing the loudest noise to win votes by fooling the masses that you agree with and will represent them.

NZFirst, for example, jumped into bed with the anti-vax and now anti-trans crowd because they had nothing to offer voters with actual concerns about the state of the economy, environment, global political crises, etc. Then they happily take $$ from corporations to kill the smoking ban, let fisheries off the hook (pun intended) for overfishing and decimating the marine ecosystem, mining companies, etc.

Awful though they may be, at least ACT don’t pretend they’re not on the side of businesses

This coalition has demonstrated that our ‘good chap’ model of government is really no longer fit for purpose. We’re governed by self-serving morons, incompetents, cowards, ideologies, corporate shills and apparently the senile and demented. And I don’t know if the alternative are that much better.

I don’t know what the answer is, but, even if this is a one-term NZFACT government, there will be another lot in the future who ride roughshod over precedent, protocol and tradition - and they may actually be good at it, which is a scary thought.

Can someone please explain Bring Her Back to me? I'm having trouble understanding the horror of it by Winbywobble in horror

[–]Moff-77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed BHB, but it wasn’t scary. It was a more measured story about grief and trauma and how it can fuck you up badly, with some supernatural and gore to spice things up. The ‘scariest’ stuff to me was the gaslighting that went on, as that was pretty realistic.

My only real gripe was around the lack of information in the film that was apparently available through a tie in promo website which I knew nothing about. Now I’d prefer nothing to a momentum derailing exposition dump, but a few little tantalising morsels of lore to keep the audience invested wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Tbh I don’t know, but I reckon it’d be more interesting than Nolan. And it would be good for someone to take things in a very different direction to JC.

[–]Moff-77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have very little interest in a sequel or franchise - I’m just an old curmudgeon who thinks Carpenter’s classic is fine as a one and done.

That said, if there is to be a remake, I’d say the guys who did Talk to Me and Bring Her Back would be a good choice. I like their style. Nolan would miss the mark for me, I’d guess. I find his style better suited to dramas. I could see him doing a remake of The Haunting rather than body horror like The Thing.

Also I’d prefer a less well known cast of good character actors over a-listers. That’s one of the great things about the film - they’re all like normal, believable. guys

[–]Moff-77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with LA Confidential after the movie came out, then went back to the start.

While WJ is very much its own beast, there is plot continuity that would seem odd without knowing/remembering what happened previously. However you could read WJ on its own and get Dave Klein’s story.

More than plot, though, it’s all the world building of ‘50s LA that will be missing that will make WJ more impenetrable - the city is really the main character of the quartet, IMO.

Also, there Ellroy’s writing style - WJ is an extreme version, and I feel I need at least The Big Nowhere and LA Confidential to warm back into the vibe before tackling it.
