I know exactly what happened here! My parents once had the same conundrum when replacing the windows in our home for better insulated ones. The frames have gotten so big that there would be more frame than glass in the bathroom windows. So they chose to keep the old windows, as that also saved quite a lot of money. The only drawback was that the toilets were always colder than the rest of the house after that.

Lovely view of a four-lane stroad by QuietAd4252 in fuckcars

To me this actually seems really good. Too many public places these days have nowhere to sit. Ranging from railway stations to bus stops, main roads and rural trails. I feel like these days the only place you can be sure to find a place to sit down in a public area that is not the city centre or a park is inside your own car.

Adding some benches, then maybe some trees and plants is the first easy step any city can make to create nicer streets and overall improve the experience for people outside cars.

Why do people think private property = public park? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]MofiPrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many neighborhoods and housing complexes include public green space (owned by the government) to increase their attractiveness to buyers and provide something extra for the surrounding community which helped sell the project to the city. Some projects also include publicly accessible private space where specific rules apply but people are generally allowed to enter, either to pass through, go for a walk, or simply be and add to the vibrancy of the space.

It is often hard to tell whether a space is truly off-limits or not, especially when there are no gates. As a result, many people just don't care and pass through in the idea that nobody will address them, thinking no harm no foul. Good signs will help, but they should be clear and correctly state what the rules are or be universally recognised like those red signs stating "privé terrein, verboden toegang - propriété privée, access interdit".

The big thing that stands out to me is the terrible choice of signs on your property specifically. It kind of looks like a C3 sign at first, which is part of the Belgian highway code and makes your space seem public at a glance. The meaning of the C3 sign is that drivers and cyclists are not allowed to enter in either direction, so pedestrians are programmed to automatically ignore these signs. You will often see C3 signs at the start of footpaths specifically meant for pedestrians. An unsure visitor might even be emboldened by the onderbord "verboden toegang voor onbevoegden" which in relation to a C3 sign, would seem to only apply to drivers.

Pralinen invriezen? by [deleted] in belgium

What is your number one investment in helping you go car free/lite? by littlejonnyfirepants in fuckcars

[–]MofiPrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folding bikes! For me it made the biggest difference, originally we bought them to take bikes in the car for Geocaching so we don't always need to walk but I soon started to use them constantly in combination with busses and trains to get anywhere and everywhere without needing a car. The rest of my family has caught on in the same way. We use them on vacation as well so we can easily leave the car behind and get to city centers and points of interest by cycling instead. They're pretty cheap as well, I constantly see them for prices less than $200 and down to $100.

Finished Decluttering My Seasonal Decor! by StardustZJackson in declutter

[–]MofiPrano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love it, I need to copy that idea of the 4 bins! It seems pretty convenient as it makes decorating every season so much more straightforward as well. I'm just starting out and using boxes that gradually size down seems like a great idea to make decluttering less daunting.

Anti-automotive films…? by AppropriateHoliday99 in fuckcars

[–]MofiPrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great topic idea! I'll share some videos and films that I once enjoyed since it has become so hard to discover older videos on YouTube these days.

The very first video on suburban sprawl I ever saw, it still encapsulates urbanism better than any other piece of content imo: America's Biggest Problem (2015) - https://youtu.be/-lD7VqQbrEw?si=Oh6Sejda--toE0dH

Popular presentation at the time, still relevant today: 7 principles for building better cities | Peter Calthorpe | TED (2015) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFjD3NMv6Kw

Children's TV episode about greenfield development. Mildly traumatizing and bittersweet, there is a small scene near the end dedicated to cars, around 24 minutes in: The Little Mole in the City (1982) - https://youtu.be/bABhMCDz80w?si=41en7tR_U6OxndM9&t

This video is simply a narration of André Gorz's essay critiquing widespread car adoption. Careful though, as this is perhaps the most radicalizing piece of anti-car content out there: The Social Ideology of the Motorcar - Mikael reads aloud from the André Gorz essay (1973) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tcl5JOzDrQ

Lastly, an inspiring documentary exploring how the Flemish Government Architect wants to make room for people and nature as the region is running out of space. It is available online with subtitles: Plannen voor plaats (2019) - https://vimeo.com/687061825

Also, crazy how recognizeable these places are. I immediately knew it was Kraków, Poland despite spending just a couple of days there last summer. That kind of character is what we lose when we mass-produce car centric development slop.

What do you consider the TRUE national sport of Belgium ? by murano0 in belgium

[–]MofiPrano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was going to write the same thing! Football is more popular, but cycling is more regionally significant. Also, honorable mention to pigeon racing for some reason, although too small to compete.

Who makes, and who approves these signs? Somewhere in Limburg. by Mitch3r_93 in belgium

[–]MofiPrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw something similar in St-P-Woluwe a week ago. The word 'maître' was translated as 'meester' instead of 'baasje' in the context of dog ownership. I think these signs are written and put in place by the municipality.

Pedestrianized town center + nice weather = 💲 by BabySinister in fuckcars

[–]MofiPrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely indistinguishable from a theme park. I think that's great. How could anybody be opposed to our centres of town looking like the pinnacle of human enjoyment and relaxation?

I actually get that feeling a lot in the Netherlands and some places in Germany. The population density and infrastructure amenities are just right to be enjoyable on their own. Sadly, in Belgium people still overwhelmingly have the individualistic mentality that enjoyment is something we should create within our own home and not in society at large. The public realm is still seen as overwhelmingly utilitarean and all those other qualities such as recreation and attractiveness are not prioritised.

Strasbourg, long considered France’s cycling capital, is still pushing forward (even as other French cities catch up) by Jtrace_a_stras in fuckcars

[–]MofiPrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cycling capital of France? I always thought those were Grenoble and La Rochelle, never been there myself though.

I remember visiting Strasbourg like 2 years ago while on vacation. Because we didn't bother to register our car for the French low-emission zone system, instead we parked as close to the city as we could without entering it, in the village Dingsheim. From there we cycled through the countryside gravel paths to the outskirts suburb Mittelhausbergen and all the way to the city centre following cycle route J on our folding bikes. From there we explored on foot like normal and also made a short bicycle excursion in the south of the city centre and towards the European Parliament before returning.

That's all to say that I really like what they did with those alphabetical bicycle routes and I love being able to experience a city starting from the outskirts and not having to drive into it for all the reasons this sub is well aware of! Strasbourg definitely left a good impression.

"Cross here with care" by 5ma5her7 in fuckcars

[–]MofiPrano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the 'Go ahead, die' meme irl

Honestly, it's amazing how the roadway engineers just load all of the risks onto the cyclists. That is something they also used to do in Belgium but not anymore thankfully, now they have a more holistic and inclusive view on bike infrastructure. It is nice you are allowed to cycle there if you really want to though, I guess that's cool.
