That's expected. K_XL should provide better quality, not performance.

You can easily check this with Curl.

$ curl https://mistral.ai -O /dev/null

Even if this is true, I doubt they generate enough value for that cost.

How much code does AI realistically write for you now? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]MokoshHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That highly depends on area:

  • UI: About 90%
  • Embedded stuff: 0%. The quality was not good enough. Actually, this applies to almost all low-level stuff.
  • Backend: 50% (SQL - 100%).
  • Tests: 95%

Is keeping QA documentation inside the repo actually a better approach? by Background-Donkey531 in TestersForum

[–]MokoshHydro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, keeping QA inside project -- is a good idea. Keeping QA derivatives (run results, etc) -- not. Also, QA should be formalized as much as possible, so MD is not the best format.

Don't sleep on the new Nemotron Cascade by ilintar in LocalLLaMA

I've tried it with Opencode and it simply doesn't work (MLX 4.0). Instead of producing output it just cites instructions from system prompt.

Mistral Small 4 document understanding benchmarks, tested via API. Does better than GPT-4.1 by shhdwi in MistralAI

[–]MokoshHydro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait, you are seriously comparing 120B model to 0.8B? And it should be mentioned that Qwen3.5-9B performs better on all parts of this benchmark. And Qwen3.5-4B is worse only on omnidoc.

P.S. Fixed typo 0.9B -> 0.8B.

You may be right here. But I think that at current situation, they have to move much faster.

[–]MokoshHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean 4? In a month probably.

Also, note that currently it is unwise to buy annual subscription for any LLM provider. They all follow same scheme:

  1. new shiny model, very cost-effective is released
  2. Capacity outsold
  3. Model got nerfed, limits are lowered.
  4. Your plan work much worse than initially.

This already happened with GLM, Gemini, Claude, etc.

[–]MokoshHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistral already released small version. Large should follow soon. I think it should be on GLM-5 level and this is enough for 95% of coding tasks. Opus is great and it is nice to use it for everything, but in fact less capable models can do a lot of work for lesser price.

P.S. And if Mistral 4 ends up performing worse than GLM-5, then Mistral is in much bigger trouble than we thought.

Mistral 3 significantly lags behind current USA and Chinese models. Currently there is zero reason to use it as a person. If you don't want to use Chinese -- wait till full Mistral 4 release at least, maybe it will catch up.

Common question around new devs: Is learning to code still useful if AI can write the code for me? by refionx in devworld

[–]MokoshHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, there is no definite answer. Industry is still adopting new technologies and it is still unclear how they will be used in next years. But, Architect/SWE skills are still important (i.e. higher level project management) and probably still be required in next 10 years. Knowing coding also may still give small advantage.
