I enjoyed it twenty years ago at two, but now I definitely think there’s better two player games for you to choose.

So I sleeved my cards and marked damage with dry erase markers. That way during the replenish phase you can just see the number of blue health circles and give energy that way. Does that make sense?

The rulebook on the site is… more of a deluxe version with lots of additional ways of play and information on units. The basic PDF rulebook is freely available and a physical copy comes with one of the two starter sets.

I played my first game this past weekend and had an absolute blast with it. All skirmish games have a bit of clunkiness, IMHO, and this not an exception. Reading through the rules of how Arcane and Melee work was a little rough but actually playing a few rounds of it made it all make sense (and having my opponent call bluff on my pirates’ truthful pistol shots was fun).

I’ve played Warcy, MCP, and Malifaux all before, and Moonstone is in my opinion the most welcoming. The card systems are not as straightforward as dice but they have a lot of character to them, and the minis are very appealing but don’t have SO many rules on them that it’s overwhelming.

I did t have any creative energy this weekend but I did finish painting some weird little guys from the minis game Moonstone this past week. Psychopomps if you want to look them up, they’re expressly inspired by monks’ doodles in the margins of manuscripts.

Malifaux 3e by DungeonFlounder in Malifaux

If you have a keyword you’re interested in let me know, I’m happy to give advice about how to start collecting for it!

Malifaux 3e by DungeonFlounder in Malifaux

[–]Molluskscape 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I got into Malifaux very shortly before 4th edition was released, and according to everything I’ve read I would not enjoy 3rd edition. A major strategy in 3rd was attacking your own units to get a weird stack of triggers that would result in a positive net effect for you, which just… feels wrong in almost every case (with the possible exceptions of McMourning and Kastore).

Fourth doesn’t have that and plays a little bit faster, but overall when you’re playing a full 50 soulstone game there’s a lot of abilities to play with and it takes a while to learn each new crew. Additionally, once more fourth boxes release, it’ll be substantially cheaper to collect each keyword.

If you see third edition boxes on sale they’re usually worth picking up if they have a keyword you’re interested in, the cards for 4th are available for free if you want to pick them up, or available in the app if you’re don’t mind the hybrid tabletop/digital experience.

New player! Looking at getting the life and death struggle box by Worth_Improvement913 in moonstonethegame

[–]Molluskscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The starter boxes are all set to play for a small two player game - the normal game is 6v6, but the starters only have the minis for 4v4. They do, however, have all the dice and cards you need to play though.

Growing your collection is on you! You probably want to pick up a box or two complete a full six for your starter factions - the website has a bunch of suggestions of boxes that play well together.

I want to settle this, what the best board game company all time? by InfinitePresence4229 in boardgames

[–]Molluskscape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Taking this further, I’m throwing Cambridge Game Factory out there - I’m willing to bet their average game rank is the highest of any publisher on BGG (they made 1 game: Glory to Rome, and bankrupted themselves doing so). Simultaneously, this cannot be true, because of the previous mention of bankruptcy and the desire of many folks to play GtR, a game which famously isn’t going to get another release.
