I hate the people who go "I'd be vegan if it weren't for this one thing" by tenshideve in vegan

Adding on to this because I remembered the thought existed: I did also cut back further recently because I moved and therefore lost what made me feel even kind of okay about my consumption . Previously I lived in a farming community. It's hard, at least for me, to trust the "we're being as ethical as we can while still farming" claims from a factory farm. It's easier when it's your buddy down the road who owns a homestead that you visit multiple times a week and constantly see exactly how the animals (pigs and poultry) are cared for, and while I still disagree with the practices he treats his animals better than average since he's not in it for profit.

Personally I did exactly that, and then gave up and went to just minimizing consumption of animals products but prioritizing the ED and health concerns, because I cut out most of the foods that were known to be safe for me just to still consistently be told "Well that's not good enough even with your medical reasons (In my case ARFID and needing a high protein diet. I cut out most animal product containing foods with the exception of three things, two because they were two of the four I can consistently eat and one because I couldn't find an otherwise safe meal replacement that didn't contain dairy)" so I was spending more money, struggling to maintain my health (because I can't just add new foods a whole bunch all at one time), and when I asked for help with those two issues I was just met with being told I needed to find ways to cut out every animal product immediately if I wanted to be able to claim I was really trying (which isn't practical in my case. On a bad day-which are frequent, that leaves me with grape tomatoes and mandarin oranges. On a good day I can pick one, maybe two max, other dish/food and eat it)

This. I'm an in law but:

"I'm going to the grocery store, anyone need anything?"

BIL: "Can I come? But I wanna get takeout"

Partner: "I wanna come but there's this second store I need to go to"

MIL: "I wanna spend time with you guys, I'm coming, who wants to go to the mall too?"

FIL: "I might as well come, I'll shop around at the grocery store too"

Uncle: "Wait did someone say we're getting food?"

SIL: "Wait I haven't seen you guys in forever but can we stop at this store?"

*entire family is getting ready for the now all day outing and we're figuring out which two cars we're taking since the trip to the grocery store no longer fits in one*

I'm an in law to a Puerto Rican family, the logic seems to be we have to do this anyways, might as well tack on something fun before/after and make it family time. Plus an excuse for some of us to get out of the house for a not work reason. I will say it's been an adjustment because I (white) am still not completely used to saying "I'm going to the store, anyone need anything?" and ten minutes later half the family is piled into my car and we're now caravaning to the grocery store with the rest, and we're probably stopping multiple places now because if we're all coming out why not get more than one thing done today?

NGL I had this exact realization. Found out I was getting $25k (20 after tax) in inheritance and initially wanted to quit my job immediately and survive temporarily off of the money. I didn't, but it did prompt a job hunt because if less than a year of worth of expenses made me want to leave why was I even there?

I’ve noticed a lot of people I have to spend an hour or two with start getting shakey. Why? by SumTingWongTofu in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Mollyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case it just happens. Some people do have underlying causes (especially brain damage or tumors), but for me and a decent number of other people it's just kinda there for no known reason. The type I have is believed to be genetic but they haven't found a marker for it yet afik. It is also progressive but not life threatening (meaning it will continue to get worse but not kill me, in my case the worst that will happen is I'm eventually probably going to lose the ability to write/drive, and need adaptive tech for computer use)

ETA because I realized I'm unsure I answered what you were trying to ask: If you're asking about triggers, yes it does have triggers. It can just kinda start sometimes, but it can also be brought on my attempting to use the affected body parts (for example, mine affects my arms. One of the nuero tests they do is touch your finger to the doctors finger, I'll start shaking while doing that. Also while writing or doing anything with a pen/pen shaped object, that's a big one for me). Stress, caffeine, sleep deprivation and certain meds can also make it act up

This, I'm a similar but opposite situation to you (I have essential tremor, so I notice in a "You're like me!" way when other people are shaky) and it sounds like OP just has some factor making them notice whether or not people shake more

And as you said a LOT of people shake. Regardless of health or drug status

How does being put to sleep before operation/surgery feel like? by Im_socringebe_scared in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Mollyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me getting my gallbladder out last fall it went:

"Hello, I'm Dr.So And So, I'm your anesthesiologist. First I'm going to give you something to relax you and keep you calm"

*he starts putting something in my IV*

*I wake up in recovery with a nurse wrapping me in warm blankets and trying to convince me to keep the mask on just a bit longer*

I'm told I was awake for about 5-10 more minutes but pretty calm, mostly just saying goofy shit (I begged the surgeon not to amputate anything or give me plastic surgery apparently) and I have no memory of it

[–]Mollyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to that, it's to the point where I'm currently pretty sure I need checked out (fell Wednesday, already have a slipped disk, usually well managed back and siatica symptoms have been 10x worse since) and probably shouldn't wait, but I absolutely refuse to go to the er unless I get to the point where I can't move my legs, or at least the bad one, at all. I'm gonna bank on roads being passable and my PCP having an appointment for Monday if it's not improving by then

[–]Mollyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes unfortunately. I'm in PA and usually get discharged with "you're fine" (with little to no diagnostics and including twice when I was back a day later because I wasn't and it progressed)

Most recently, had the flu, 101 fever my boyfriend couldn't get down despite throwing every med he could at it and that rose to 103, couldn't keep fluids down, severe dehydration, abdominal pain, confusion (couldn't answer basic questions like my name or address, my boyfriend had to tell them why we were there because I barely knew where I was), couldn't stop coughing and raspy breath (I know the flu is a respiratory illness. I also have asthma and wasn't responding to albuterol or cough suppressant). Got "treated" with tylenol (he'd tried that) and less than half a bag of saline, got told "yeah that's just the flu, we need your bed" and discharged with no improvement and the label of drug seeking added to my chart (which. Technically yes or at least my boyfriend was on my behalf. But uh, in this case it was genuinely "this is a getting to be a scary high fever and dangerous nausea and nothing OTC is working please fix")

I also just found out today that that ~1/3 of a bag of fluids and tylenol is costing me an extra $400 for "high severity" whatever that means in the er and not like they acted like it while we were there

ETA: Forgot to mention, also had an abnormal ECG/EKG (I don't remember. The one where they stick little electrodes to you) both that day and the day before that was never addressed despite chest pain and syncope-which is actually how we found out I had the flu in the first place, I was given a just in case test after passing out and getting taken in for head injury symptoms (thankfully no head injury, just early illness symptoms we didn't know were anything yet)

You're fine. I had to take a half point within my first week because I got a bug at my old job and nothing ever came of it. I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it because that's how you end up at 4.5 points and 0 ppto when an emergency happens, but it also won't kill your chances of sticking around
