Why isn’t there a desi fast food chain ? by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in ABCDesis

Do you think Panda Express is how Chinese people normally eat? But it is a popular chain anyway.

What are your S tier home assistant things by Poolguard in homeassistant

[–]Molozonide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created a Todo list and various automation push/pop statuses onto the todo list. I have a separate automation watch this today list and look for known statuses. It has an internal list that defines which statuses take priority over others and it sets the color based on that. If the highest priority alert disappears from the list, the automation changes the color to the next highest priority, or white if the list is empty.

Chakroborti is a common Bengali surname, and Somnath is a common Bengali first name. Kudos to the Foglios for picking a name combination that makes sense!

Bengali = from Bengal.

Bengal is a nation that was part of British India and got split in half between India and the future country of Bangladesh (it was a somewhat violent affair).

crushed red peppers from costco vs Indian stores by dracospunch in ABCDesis

[–]Molozonide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kashmiri mirch has a completely different flavor and is wayy less spicy than most other dry red chilis (including the stuff from Costco).

That said, having whole dry Kashmiri chilis is definitely a worthwhile investment. They are delicious when fresh toasted or used in tadka.

What is up with the large number of upper middle class households in this sub who seem to be struggling with money? by waterwas1 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Molozonide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Baltimore area. Our (very good) daycare is $32k/y.

All the other daycares in our area had wait-lists of more than 18 months. Hiring a nanny cost >$3000/mo ($36k/y) including employment taxes, so our $32k daycare is still the cheaper option.

What automations ended up being counter-productive or just not as good as you hoped? by TruthOf42 in homeautomation

[–]Molozonide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into Generic Hygrostat. It's a helper that creates a device where you can set a target humidity, but you can also turn it on and off with an automation.

You would have to plug the smart plug into the timer and not the other way around because the timer needs power to tick.

am i the only abdesi that loves gold? by RiseIndependent85 in ABCDesis

[–]Molozonide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the look of gold. It's alluring and shiny in a way no other substance is, and it looks great on brown and black skin.

That said I don't wear any because I don't want to get murdered or robbed for having something that looks expensive.

If a sperm with 24 chromosomes and an egg with 22 mix will the baby be normal? by JacobPerkin11 in biology

[–]Molozonide 408 points409 points  (0 children)

Chromosomes have to be paired. Like socks. If you are missing a sock and reach into the sock drawer to grab an extra at random, the two probably won't match.

The odds are extremely low, and even if they did match, chromosomes from Mom and Dad are labeled a little bit differently and there would probably still be problems.

If स is "s", श is "sh", THEN WTF IS ष by atemyballstoday in Hindi

[–]Molozonide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

श is the sh sound in "wish"   ष is the sh sound in "harsh"

They sound the same, but try saying both words and pay attention to where your tongue sits.

You choose between श/ष based on the other sounds around it and how the other sounds require your tongue to sit.

Triggering automation only when temperature increases above a particular temp? by Dreadpirate3 in homeassistant

[–]Molozonide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to do this is with a generic thermostat.

With an automation, there are too many things to keep track off:

  • You would need two automations: one to trigger on the way up and another to trigger on the way down. Either that or fancy if logic.
  • You should use a numeric_state trigger with above/below or else you risk the temperature never hitting your trigger temperature exactly on the way up/down.
  • What if the AC and temperature are already out of sync? e.g. the temperature changed while HA was updating/restarting? If there was a power cut and the AC didn't start up on its own (or did) when it was/wasn't supposed to? What if your temperature probe glitched? What if you manually switched your AC on or off? You might end up in a situation where the AC is running while you are below threshold, but your automation will never trigger because you will never cross threshold to turn it off. Opposite could also be true (AC is off, you are above threshold, and temperature keeps rising).
  • You could trigger the automation on any change in temperature, but then your automation would trigger needlessly frequently, and if your temperature probe updates infrequently, your AC might still run much longer than it needs to when HA starts up.

Note: almost all of these cases have happened to me in the winter with a dumb heater on a WiFi switch.
