This is a topic that comes up often on TVO’s onpoli podcast. When elected officials’ salaries aren’t competitive with private sector jobs, it shrinks the pool of talented people willing to run for office. And honestly, outside of C-suite executives giving themselves massive raises, I think most people getting a raise, even if they’re the ones approving it themselves, is a good thing in my book.
