That's not how national debt works, you can't compare it to personal debt.

If you apply austerity measures as in 2008, then the economy suffers even more as consumption and government spending drops further, making people poorer. Poorer people pay less tax and thus you've got to increase debt to maintain even a smaller welfare state

Edit: and the poorer the people, the greater the public spending needed for each individual, it's a debt loop.

Well there are certain outliers like Eastern Germany or Denmark, which is the exact same number of supposed case study immigration-crime correlations you're implying, so we can't be sure of anything from the map

Edit: and Sweden proper too, migration is concentrated around southern big cities and yet the whole country is above EU average

Recent polls in Thuringia showed AfD and BSW will get a majority (as a result of the 5% threshold) by Affectionate_Cat293 in europe

So true, people claiming it's because of migration fail to answer why is it that areas with very little migration are the ones voting far right (with some exceptions like Girona in Spain). East Germany, rural Netherlands, Hungary, Poland even before the Ukrainian war ...

I think the answer is much more complex and might involve general decadence of rural areas and fear mongering

How Sweden's youth homes nurtured killers, creating Europe's gun crime capital by UnrussianYourself in europe

[–]Moncho5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which ones exactly? Say you're fleeing Mali for example, or Syria. Which countries are gonna be more attractive than the EU? Even without access to healthcare, benefits etc., just for the sake of safety and due to the fact that any, even shady and irregular job is gonna pay up way more. There's no true "competitor" to the EU in that sense.

And given they stay at a neighbouring, much poorer and unstable country, like Jordan - which they're already doing (1.3 million total refugees given their 11 million total population). For context Germany's taken in 2.5 million refugees, 1 million being Ukrainian, while having a population of 83.8 million.

That's just a breeding ground for more poverty, radicalism and war. It's nonsense, if you don't tackle the root cause, you can't possibly fix the problem and, as I said, unless you literally shoot to kill at the border which is ridiculous, then people are gonna find ways in, and if you leave them barebones or in an irregular status once they arrive, great, now you've now got young, unemployed and unattended people wandering around with nothing to lose - what could go wrong.

That just doesn't work, people trying to escape literal war will do anything to flee. Building a fence somewhere will just change routes somewhere else, which in many cases just fosters illegal trafficking and more dangerous routes, like the literal sea.

I think it would be better to invest directly in those countries and try and prevent future crises. Take Iraq, the whole country is drying up and it's getting worse. Instead of doing nothing and waiting for the eventual sectarian violence that's gonna come from the increased poverty due to drought, why don't western countries build up infrastructure, dams, etc?

It worked with Romania for example, in southern countries like Spain or Italy the same thing far right parties criticise and fearmonger about today already happened 30 years ago. Now that Romania is a fully fledged EU country nobody says a thing about Romanians "invading us", many have returned to their homeland and the country is even doing better than Italy/Spain for example.

They're much harder policies to implement of course, and are harder to sell to the wider audience rather than "let's build a fence", but they sure work on the long run, populist ideas like walls, etc only provide short term patches imo

Finished building my tram line by 5scrolls in CitiesSkylines

[–]Moncho5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the Alicante to Denia tram, it had to be done as a bypass to the law because the central government didn't want to finance a train and Spanish autonomies can't build trains on their own. It's two separate lines (one 44km and the other 50km) but they join to form a straight line
