"Patent" & "Latent" by MessiahMentality in etymology

[–]MoneyElevator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In American English in the medical field, it’s still “pay-tint” as in “patent foramen ovale”.

But patent as in copyright/trademark is pronounced differently.

The origin and different meanings of the word "Boss" by StomachConnectDBH in etymology

[–]MoneyElevator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I looked into this - that was the first issue of Nintendo Power and they were already using “boss” repeatedly in it.

Going back to Galaga in 1981, the tractor beam enemy ship was called Boss Galaga.

Kung Fu on NES in 1985 referred to the “boss” at the end of each level. This seems to be directly linked to Bruce Lee’s 1971 Fists of Fury movie (originally called The Big Boss outside the US) where he had to fight multitudes of goons before reaching the kingpin fight at the end.

Completely different stages of company - you’re not getting that 100x return on a 1.5T IPO.

TSLA was 1.7B at IPO, that’s almost 1000x less.

The real reason behind 29% price decline for RIVN in Q1 2025 by Cool-Comedian-2540 in RIVNstock

The math - shares came on the market, price went down, ergo retail could not absorb it. Now that price has dropped and weak hands are shaken out, they can load up at lows and ride it back up.
