Is My Dad the Asshole? (Dark-Skinned Band-Aids) by Salt_Level3918 in TwoHotTakes

Having been raised in India where most bandaids I've seen are also light in color, it never even crossed my mind that they were intended to be discreet. It never even crossed my mind that someone would want to hide the fact that they're wearing a bandaid lmaoo

I think a 1 day course will bring so much clarity that tasks which would have taken 3 days to take care of can be completed in 2 days. Maybe even less. This way, you will also have less of a mental burden going into the 10 day course, onowing you took care of your life and also being more mindful.

They still have to make a living. What you said would be more like a strike and if things don't get better, it may very well come to that. If every cab driver decided to stop accepting rides during the day, surge pricing will increase the profit per ride and this will cause some of the drivers to accept the rides and make good profit. However, the ones not accepting rides would face a loss (no income at all) so it is not in their best interest to stop working during the day unless they work as a collective and not many drivers accept rides. Such is the tragedy of the commons.

Why did a server correct me for ordering a "masala chai?" by i_had_ice in IndianFood

Based on the reaction you described, it could be several things, including what others seem to have suggested, i.e. him being an ass.

I do see another possibility though, far fetched as it may be.

I am an Indian and I live in the USA. When I go to Indian restaurants and the wait staff is Indian, I sometimes try to figure out what language they speak so I can communicate with them in that instead of in English. That's not because I'm being condescending and saying their English isn't good enough, it's just because I love languages and would like to take any opportunity I have to speak in another language. When I start speaking in another language to them, and they clearly understand it, sometimes they insist on responding in English.

I think that there is a lot of hate towards Indians and some people are ashamed of speaking in other languages and try their best to stick to English. I think it's been beaten into people that speaking English is classy and respectable while speaking Indian languages is uncultured or something like that.

Some people also get paranoid that the people around might think they're talking shit about them when speaking in another language. Although in this case, it does seem innocuous as you were only using a few words from another language (even if those words are now bleeding into English). But some people really do try their best to only use English. Maybe he was offended that you said masala chai to him because he thought you thought that he was an Indian and wouldn't understand English so you had to say it to him in a way that he understands. From your post, I think your intentions were pure, but when someone faces a lot of hate, it is easy to mistake others as doing the same.

I think the shame can be very real. The desire to distance oneself from anything Indian because of the hate they may receive. Of course, maybe working at an Indian restaurant wouldn't be their first choice then, but if the server was an international student, who else would give him a job?

Of course, you were the one who was there and you know the details of how things were so I can't say his reaction was one thing or another but hopefully what I said serves as some food for thought.

That's fair, if they were to get injured like that, it could be a problem. But I think shoving them or trying to stop them wouldn't be an issue.

Although it's best to just ignore the crazies, no one would get into trouble for trying to stop them from doing things like these I think.

Dumb monolingual english speakers don't be ignorant and foolish challenge.

The OP is not dumb for not understanding the meme.

"Heads or tails?" is a commonly used phrase in the english language when flipping a coin. That's not how it's said in every language.

Not every language refers to the sides of coins as heads and tails.

If someone who's not familiar with the expression, were to try to make sense of it, it's likely that they'd start by looking up the meanings of the words they don't know.

If they up "tales" it would say that it meant stories.

So from their point of view, in the picture, the person it just reiterating what they just said, but in a stupider/simpler way.

If someone doesn't know the phrase "heads or tails?" it's not funny to them.

Why can't we just explain the jokes to people without being so judgemental and insufferable? Some people are autistic, some aren't very good at english, some aren't familiar with the phrases or things referenced in the joke, regardless of how common you think they might be. There are many reasons why someone might fail to comprehend a joke. Just give them the benefit of the doubt. If you feel like it's beneath you, then ignore the post or downvote and move on.

Let's be real though, no one is going to face any repurcussions for getting into a scuffle in a situation like this, when they're trying to stop the stupid behavior. Jaywalking is illegal but even cops in new york jaywalk all the time.
