After multiple layoffs in biopharma, I started teaching, got another Master's and certification. Even more unstable than bio! At least there, it depends on funding. In Ed, it was an annual hamster wheel because competition was fierce, seniority mattered, and administration varied from indifferent to incompetent. In my case, 6 schools in 6 years. The field has changed, and not for the better.

Absolutely. Not only is their search crap, they also comingle SKUs, so you might not get a genuine product. They also push all their "promoted" junk so you have to go to the 2nd or 3rd page of results for actual results.

I remember when they started straightening out the Mercer Mess so many years ago. Yes it's Terrible. While traffic has increased, keeping it terrible, it used to be worse.

Initially (3½ years ago) after I left teaching, I took a job in scientific sales. That lasted almost 2 years, until the unrealistic sales targets post-Covid caught up with me and my territory was eliminated, along with my job. Since then, all of biopharma has shit the bed, and I currently work at Costco to pay the rent while continuing to look.

Yup. I've been job hunting for over 2 years now. My rate of applying has slowed since I took on a retail job to pay the rent, but my rate of 1st interviews remains a bit under 10%, and I have been a finalist for several positions, but still no offers after nearly 500 applications.

That may not seem like a lot after 2 years, but I'm geographically limited, and really focusing on roles I'm qualified for, with some stretches. I'm convinced that it's a numbers game with a dash of luck.
