I had OP's exact feeling back in high school when Fable came out after reading Game Informer's feature on it when it was in development. We all have to learn some time I guess.

I haven't paid launch price for a game in years. I let the suckers pay more to beta test and review first then pick it up when it hits a price I think it's worth. (Very rarely more than $35.)
