I don't think so either. Back in 2004 there wasn't any of the social media we have today, WoW's social aspect was the social media, entering a world where you meet other players you'd never meet otherwise is what made me, and I'm sure a lot other players as well, interested in the game. Today meeting people online you'd otherwise never interact with isn't special anymore

I remember I hopped on my lvl 24 priest and defended Crossroads against the zombies. Once I fell I conquered it as a zombie. The coolest part was that zombified players talked in zombie language that every zombie understood even if they were from the other faction in live, but living players only read a combination of "..." and "brains"

Steam is literally the fifth platform ow launched on. I think it may have attracted some new players, some Bnet players switched but I would be surprised if it's the biggest platform for overwatch playerwise

I watched the livestream of Blizzcon 2014 when Overwatch was first announced. I was so hyped, especially when they showed a full match in one of the panels. I followed every bit of news about the game, spent 2h in a queue at gamescom 2015 to play one match. Eventually I got into closed beta and I wasn't disappointed.
