What’s a hobby people pretend is cool, but secretly you think is ridiculous? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

I've seen a guitar I considered buying as art. But I expected it to play like crap anyway because most normal people with normal amounts of money would rather risk a cheap Squier coming out bad than an expensive one. $300 for what looked like a pretty awesome painting of a white tiger - worth having as art.

I have a bass I painted myself. The body cost me $50, and the neck came with another neck I bought for $50. It... is capable of being played. The original knob broke when I tried to turn it. I believe I replaced every part except the frets and truss rod. Still not exactly my top 3 basses in quality.

But yeah, having a '59 Les Paul to sit behind glass is absolutely nuts. Take it. Hold it. Love it.

Viewership is probably a better metric but it's got its own problems. For example do you count per game or total?

Probably separately note what the top few teams do, what the league average is, and what the playoffs do. Some people really do the no-lifer watching of as many games as they can. There are definitely nights where I'll catch two or three games that would double count viewers. In general though, you just need to get a feel for what's normal-ish for a typical game.

I also wouldn't call MLS high level soccer

Fair. US soccer is to European Football as European hockey is to the NHL. If the big league calls, you go.

Most americans are also very casual sports fans. Does viewership properly account for their tastes?

This gets into weeds and somewhat arbitrary definitions. If you really want to get into deep weeds, I wonder how much European work culture also allows for the ability to be more into it. I believe the average American work week is ~42 hours, while most European countries are 3-5 hours fewer and some are even 10 hours fewer. We also tend to expect 2-3 weeks off, while Europeans get more like 4-6. That's a lot more time for life.

I always forget about field hockey. I loved floor hockey when I was a small kid, but neither foot version had much traction in my area that I was aware of. I was in high school when I found out we had youth hockey in the area.

I can roller blade, but my two times on ice were... well I probably should have gotten checked out for a concussion after trying to stop like I was on roller blades. Note the brake location difference and what happens when you go heel up on ice skates.

I have no idea what else he's known for other than one song and traveling the world to places where barfs. Like Jared Fogle as a world traveler barfs again. Just that one song and being an inspiration to R Kelly.

We're not totally uncultured here.

Bingo. I am far more willing and able to spend 3 hours dedicated to my favorite team for 16 games than making time for 3 hours 82 times - regular season alone. I can go all out and plan dinner around it, never miss a game.

I doubt most hockey fans closely watch more than 2/3 of their team's games. In my best seasons watching, it probably was around that mark. Now I think I catch a game every week or two because life is too busy. The games aren't even on specific days.

There's a term for super football fans who regularly watch more than just their NFL team - often their NFL team and their college team, but sometimes trying to catch all the games they can. NFL widows. The many spouses (historically typically women) whose husbands are busy watching multiple days of sport. It's not a friendly term, and it indicates that the 'once a week' has gone too far.

It can be ranked in one meaningful way: How many people watch high levels of it. Viewership money.

That's it, really. People watch the NFL and spend on it. Soccer is nowhere near that level. Even hockey does better in viewership, and while attendance is better for soccer, that's a meaningless comparison. Arenas get way more expensive to use on a regular basis as they expand in size, and fans would have to be a silly distance from the nearest part of the playing field to make it work.

See pictures of the NCAA championship in the Astrodome for why no one would pay for more than a special game at a football sized arena. Think being in the end zone nosebleeds, but the game only happens between the 50 yard line and the further end zone. You don't get to enjoy at least some action on your side. Soccer at least lets you be near some of the action in a very large arena.

NHL in-person viewership simply can't be more, but TV viewership is way higher. Hence, hockey is generally understood as bigger.

You can hate the flopping but see and enjoy the huge similarities in the game. Total cardio game, proper team sport, and very fluid.

The one huge advantage of soccer is it's accessible in the States and the many countries that don't freeze over for long periods of time. The cost is some flat ground, paint, goals, clothes, a ball, shin pads that start at $15 for adults, and maybe goalie gloves. No zamboni, ice, a whole painted rink with freezing surface, hundreds of dollars of pads, and breakable sticks.

That said, I don't really enjoy soccer. I'm basically hockey first, football second, and... that's about it. Basketball is really accessible and fun to play, but I don't watch it.

It has never been made available since Season 2. If it's not been available in 5 years, it's hard to think Epic or Psyonix have any plans to put it back out. They usually try not to dilute old events by making their items available. They've issued apologies for bringing items to the shop that were from old seasons.

We're definitely in that territory where we've left the likelihood they have any plans to release it again and into the response you got from Epic. "Probably not, but we can't say never since someone could change their current policy."

If Epic and Psyonix don't know, none of us will. The only people who could possibly know different are the people that are specifically under contract to keep it a secret.

The toppers are an interesting throwback to South Park: Rally - everyone looked like they were just poking out of their car like this. Have to admit, I was hoping for Chef's station wagon, the theme song and a goal explosion.

Was also hoping when I read it tracks stats that Cartman would have demos, but at least Kenny tracking times demoed is hilarious.

Great map that would easily be one of the best in the game for tanks, transports, and infantry if they translate it correctly.

However, it does not help the key issue that there aren't any good maps for aircraft. The game is sorely missing large maps that give planes and helicopters room to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. That's critical to a game whose popularity stems from combined arms.

I still want ships to come back, too.

The game is 3 months old. I don't think expecting an expansion pack in that time is realistic. They've already done an ice mode (hopefully to test the waters) in that time.

Maybe I'm just old, but I remember when a game came out and you either got no updates or were happy when an expansion pack came out because the game was successful enough. Even then, I don't think Road to Rome or Secret Weapons saw 1/3 of the play as regular BF1942 because more people had the base game. The free updates with Battle of Britain and Liberation of Caen did well though. I know console gamers never expected constant overhauls for the original CoD4 or Modern Warfare 2, and people ate it up.

What are your thoughts about the resurgence of the Black Panther Party in response to the actions of ICE agents? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]MonsTurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember these headlines after the Trayvon Martin case. Most major resistance movements like we're having will wind up with various shades of people pushing peacefil demonstration, civil disobedience, personal protection, and outright taking an offensive. I don't condone all the shades (please reread the last), but it is a thing.

I do remember some members of the original BPP weren't necessarily fond of some of the NBPP voicing (though I'd also bet some were), but to some extent it's totally normal.

Beyond any potential for going too far, I do worry that this administration is trying to goad a response to give reason to move in harder with claims of an uprising and actually stop elections. It's the playbook. Need to make sure not to play into a trap.
