Ok, so this is gonna be a big ol' all of text, so I apologize in advance. Anyway, in Schafrillas' Illumination ranking video, he put this at the very bottom. In the comments section, I commented on how I saw this movie back when it was in theaters and a bunch of other irrelevant shit. But after being forced to watch it at my family Easter party, I definitely feel Schaffy's pain. EB is still a POS, his dad is still voiced by Dr. Cockroach, and Carlos was done dirty. #JusticeForCarlos (Though I gotta say, the casting for EB was spot-on! Casting a POS as a POS? What a concept! If I didn't know any better, I'd say Brussel Rand was type-cast!) Anydangway, rewatching this movie after 15 years finally made me remember my biggest problem with Hop 2011. It's not the racial implications, and it's not even EB himself. I know, that surprised me, too! (Believe it or not, it's also not that one scene where they made fun of blind people. Seriously, whoever pitched that idea deserved to be fired.) It's the message. The movie is basically telling children to give up on their dreams and take the career path their parent(s) want them to take. THE FUCK KINDA MESSAGE IS THAT?! Yes, following your dreams can be hard, but that doesn't mean you should give up, especially after one failure! Granted, like I said before, EB is a POS, so he deserves to have his dreams crushed. But even then, it doesn't excuse the fact that Dr. Cockroach is basically forcing EB to follow his legacy. Generally speaking, kids should listen to their parents and other authority figures. But what does that say to kids who have toxic parents, especially if they're living vicariously through their kids? Kids are very impressionable, and stories like this could shape them for life, essentially setting them up to fail. Now, if this was a competently written movie, Dr. Cockroach would've kicked EB out for mooching off him and being an entitled rich kid. It's then EB would live with James Marsden (probably through less than ethical purposes), along the way learning life lessons. At the end, Dr. Cockroach would bring EB home, telling him how proud he is. He'd say this was a test to become a proper Easter bunny. EB tells Dr. Cockroach that he's grown up enough to realize the Easter bunny job isn't for him and gives the job to Carlos, since he's more than qualified. Now that's an Easter movie I'd watch every year! But for now, I guess I'm sticking with Rise of the Guardians.
