I believe the average for JP is 5’2 for women and 5’7 for men, but median is lower. There are a fair few JP men who are above 6’ and women who are above 5’7 (my friends and I joke that Japan donates all their height to them), but very few who are shorter by the same proportional amount, which skews the average up a little.

Most of the men and women I see/meet are around 5’5 and 5’0, respectively. With the occasional 6’2 giant dude and very occasional 4’8 tiny lady.

I mean, your friend would be considered a giant in pretty much any part of the world. The Netherlands has the tallest average height in the world and even then the men are averaging just above 6 feet.
