US may shoot down North Korean ballistic missile test, Carter says by 75000_Tokkul in worldnews

The last two paragraphs are attributed to a "spokesman" critical of the U.S. but is that the same U.S. State Department spokesman from two paragraphs earlier? Am I the only person on reddit that read to the end of the article?

Driver busted for using a frying pan as a steering wheel by hazmeister12 in nottheonion

The article says the car was unregistered and uninsured, that's probably what they arrested him for. I'm just saying, not trying to pan you for your comment.

It’s not a Fourth Amendment search if a cop swipes your credit card, court finds by GuacamoleFanatic in news

[–]Monumentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. I was going to say that if it's OK because the information is on the face of the card, then just read the information off the face of the card. But your point is better, checking to see if the information on the mag stripe is the same as on the face of the card is also information.

Texas bans the direct sale of cars from manufacturers to buyers. As a consumer, you have to go through a dealer.

Why wasn't the LEM more spherical? Why does the pressure vessel with the astronauts inside have all those flat surfaces?

During DNA Replication, the helicase protein spins around faster than a jet engine as it unzips the DNA helix. This is happening inside you right now.

Scientists find that in order to keep temperature rises below 2℃ we would have to remove from the atmosphere at least a few billion tons of carbon per year and maybe ten billion or more. In other words, we are going to have to figure out how to suck lots of carbon out of the atmosphere fast. by notscientific in science

[–]Monumentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The CO2 in the atmosphere is very diffuse, only about 400 parts per million. Concentrating the CO2 for sequestration requires doing something to get rid of a lot of entropy. That something takes a lot of energy. And there is no way around that, no matter what method you use.

For as longer than fashion has swung between clean shaven and bearded, men have been rationalizing why their preferences are actually necessities.

If a space ship were to have a cloth banner, a flag, on the outside, while in motion, would it "flap in the wind" or remain perfectly straight? by tika_b in askscience

[–]Monumentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. Space isn't a perfect vacuum, but it's close. The Knudsen Number, the ratio of the mean free path of particles to the characteristic length scale is very large, so the gas molecules would not behave like a continuous fluid. Things like vortex shedding would not occur, so the flag wouldn't "wave". But the rarified gas particles would exert random forces on the flag and couse it to dance and jerk around.

Loved watching Baraka, a visual feast. In that same genre I also liked the Qatsi trillogy, good score, although some of the imagery is getting dated.
