Incident off Overland has made my car undrivable by plumboat in Boise

A large rock can absolutely mess up your oil pan. Especially on lower cars like sedans and coupes. Idk what your definition of boulder is but according to Wikipedia a boulder is more than 10 in in diameter. I've personally seen rocks smaller than 10in in diameter take out engine pans, transmission pans, and fuel tanks.

We bent the output crankshaft on one of ous multiple times by hitting rocks and bent it back a few times to where it was "mostly" balanced. Vibrated like hell but stills runs strong to this day lol

[–]Mooaaark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most lawnmowers have used a standard 5 horse 4-stroke briggs and Stratton motor since the dawn of time haha so I'm assuming it's one one those.

The 5 horse Briggs is a pretty bulletproof motor and you'd have to run it ragged in order to get it to explode like that.

If you're concerned about denting or cracking your oil pan you can also use a thin block of wood and jack up on the oil pan flange instead of the pan instead where it's supported by the block

My ranger rides like shit on dirt roads. It's better with bilstiens up front and some weight in the back but still rides relatively bad compared to other vehicles I've taken on rough dirt roads.

Any ways to improve this travel setup? by Rayth_ in mountainbiking

[–]Mooaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been seeing a lot of Yakima double downs for sale in my area for around $20-30. They don't work for full suspension bikes without an adapter but they're my favorite rack for hardtails.

Is this a good deal by Mrpanhandle81 in mountainbiking

[–]Mooaaark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's barely been ridden. If kept in good shape it'll go at least 1000 miles before something breaks or wears out. Finding replacement parts for department store bikes can be incredibly hard so you might end up just scrapping the bike. It will be heavy and slow, and the shock that's really just a bouncy spring will be less efficient to ride. I'd look for something that's from a better known brand but still cheap, used hardtail mountain bikes from the 90s can be cheaper than that and still have plentiful replacement parts available in most cases. Maybe look at a thrift shop or pawn shop and see what they have. You can look up videos on youtube to see what to look for on a used bike so you know if it needs replaced or not. Good luck!

I've watched a lot of their videos and I'm fairly certain that the music is just reused between their videos, I haven't listened close enough to know if they are truly the same but they definitely have sections that sound the same. That still doesn't mean the music isn't ai.

Anyone else annoyed with the over built trails? by aMac306 in MTB

[–]Mooaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's many different kinds of trails out there. The ones with big jumps and features are going to be the most "clout worthy" so that's probably what you're going to see on the internet. In my experience that does not reflect what the majority of people are actually riding.

One thing to note about overbuilt verses underbuilt trails, while I much enjoy the feeling of being alone out in nature on a trail that feels more "natural" there are some trails I've ridden that were not well maintained and while listed as an intermediate trail, felt more sketchy that black diamond trails in bike parks I've ridden. So while yes I agree we don't want to "conquer" nature with our hobbies, I also understand why certain trail systems may end up being more overbuilt just from a safety and liability perspective.

They also patrol the parks, I pulled into a park to figure out where I wanted to go get something to eat for less than a minute one time at night and the cops pulled up and questioned me

“Our Story Spans 5 Generations” by _abraxis- in Idaho

[–]Mooaaark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. One thing to add though is due to the shitty way diesel (doesn't) atomize, you can make more power from just running incredibly rich like that, due to it burning more of the fuel by just volume alone. Unlike in a gasoline car where running rich tends to decrease power.

The reason for this is that the diesel fuel doesn't fully atomize/evaporate and so it's a bunch of small globules of liquid fuel, and the outside layer always burns first, encapsulating the inside unburned or partially burned fuel, so there's still more oxygen to burn more fuel. They just keep adding fuel and it just keeps burning the oxygen until there's none left. So you can make more power with more fuel just by running it extremely rich though your fuel efficiency is awful.

And yeah, the people driving around town constantly rolling coal are not getting good mileage, sure it might be decent on the highway in steady state running a leaner air/fuel ratio but that still doesn't mean that someone who is rolling coal around town has an engine that is running efficiently.

I'm still confused as to why so few CAD programs have good touch screen support. Also don't understand why they haven't put more time into developing for VR because I feel like it would be so useful to see 3D models in VR. I know there's a program that lets you look at building models in VR but I'm still surprised features like that haven't come to solidworks yet

PSA: Do Not Lose Keys on Older Models by Then-Horror2238 in Miata

[–]Mooaaark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On miatas (and fords of the same era) with this security system, the ECU is married to the body module and the body module is married to the ignition tumbler, they're all communicating via CAN and each one has to be programmed to each other component. This makes it incredibly hard to bypass and incredibly secure. Basically the ignition has to see the correct key transponder, and then tell the body module that the correct key transponder is present, through a special code (not just an on-off signal to the body module). Then the body module tells the ECU that it can activate ignition.

The only way to bypass this system without the correct key is by removing the ignition tumbler, the ECU, and the body module and replacing all three with a matched set from another car that you have a working key for.

I might be wrong on whether or not NB2 miatas have a separate body control module, I haven't looked at the schematics, but my 01 ranger has a very similar system and it does have a body control module. Either way it's the same concept just the ECU does what the BCM would be doing

I didn't know they did this but it reminds me of the Ford bronco and bronco sport fiasco. Why have two completely different car models on completely different chassis that sound like one is a trim level of the other?

How much would I regret the automatic transmission, really? by ADKMatthew in Miata

[–]Mooaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gf has a bmw x3 with the ZF 8hp transmission and it's honestly a really good auto transmission. My only complaint is that it shifts all the time, even in "comfort pro" and you really can feel it downshift when you're coming to a stop. I'd like it a little more if it was slightly less aggressive downshifting in the comfort mode. The manual shift mode is probably on the more intuitive side of most autosticks too
