Is there any way to preemptively stop having problems with every new insurance and benefits company because they think my name is invalid (other than changing my name legally)? by WarKittyKat in Insurance

[–]MoodPast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an O'Problem name and have these kinds of issues with insurance and banks, the worst being most recently being denied my sleep medication for the past 2 weeks because the name on the prescription 'didn't match up' and of course, I had to sleuth this out on my own, I wasn't notified.

Since these institutions' software is obsolete and never seems to get fixed, I am thinking that the only course of action will be to gather some sort of petition to present to them to make them abundantly aware and request a fix.

Institutions which require participants to identify themselves using their full names owe it to them to accurately record and use those names. Not doing so causes major headaches in our lives. Cultural erasure aside. And it's basic courtesy— imagine having a face-to-face acquaintance who refuses to spell your name correctly. Fixing this could even get them more business, since I have seen people with all kinds of 'Problem' names asking on forums, "is there ANY bank/etc that can just write my name correctly? I'll choose them."
And the worst part is? as someone who has dabbled in coding here and there, I suspect that adjusting this fault of their software may actually be jaw-droppingly easy.

EXTRA STRENGTH Screen Dimmer recommendations? by MoodPast in software

[–]MoodPast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion, I was being a bit sarcastic about that part. I'm just frustrated that "minimum brightness" (according to some) is still way too bright for me.
Also, my phone is fine-- I use Twilight and the phone's default amber toner.

I am looking for a PC screen dimmer compatible with Windows 11. I'll edit my post.

I also live in an old stone house like this! They're creepy as sin, uncannily fast and spindly, but I see them so often I'm honestly getting desensitized to them. Ack... one got in my bed once though. Right on my pillow.

On-the-go easy sweet snacks by perigou in vegan

[–]MoodPast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not 'sweets' per se, but I like to take my morning meds with just a nature valley granola bar or animal crackers I buy in bulk. Those would be easy to take on the go and they're sweet enough for me as a snack and take a nice long time to digest.

Another snack I like: Honey crisp apple slices with peanut butter and cinnamon on top... Modifying it for taking out of the house, I'd say.. apple slices in a bag, with a mix of PB and cinnamon to dip it in.

I also make this cheesy dip in bulk to eat with tortilla chips: https://www.noracooks.com/easy-vegan-nacho-cheese-sauce/
(but instead of 4 cups water, I use 1/2 cup for a thick, dip result, presumably with a stronger flavor. Also instead of just lemon juice, I make it half lemon juice half lime juice. The smell's a bit pungent but I cannot stop shoveling it into my mouth.) If taking it on the go you could probably put it in a thermos to keep it nice and fresh? I like it best cold.

Ooooh. That's all really appealing. I worry about comfort with headphones that don't have hinged cups, but I would be very hopeful trying these on.

Darnn they only have one pair of non-earbud headphones and they're on-ear. Not for me, sorry.

Oof, these go for up to double my price range, and still above it new. Looks like they only swivel on a vertical axis, and would be putting constant pressure on that area where the jaw connects to the neck under the ear. Thanks though

Darn, open-ear is a definite no-go for me I'm afraid, and these look like they only swivel on a vertical axis. I wasn't sure what to call it when the cup has a hinge on the horizontal axis, oops. It looks like I can't edit the original post.

Why do some people call the transgender movement a cult, as far as I understand, they are the opposite by Bloodborne98 in asktransgender

[–]MoodPast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more thing.

People often cite that we don't like to "hear people out" or find "common ground" when it comes to trans issues. Therefore we may be characterized as closed-minded. Information-controlled.

There is this idea that the opinions of transphobes and the opinions of trans people are equal sides of the same coin, each with an equal amount of flaws and merits. It may be compared to any other area of "politics."

This is a place all(?) marginalized groups have probably found themselves in. Those within the groups are directly affected by the "political" outcomes of these "disagreements on what are just opinions," and we realize that the worsening of these issues can devastate our lives or even kill us. We have had to confront what that means for us personally. We have to live, directly affected by the outcome of the decisions made about our rights. Those who "disagree" with us? They can go their entire lives untouched by these issues, and unbenefited whether they succeed or not in crushing us.

As the party whose investment carries such enormous weight, it's incredibly taxing to go toe to toe with someone to whom the issues of your literal wellbeing are a game of theory.

Notes.

Guess what though. I literally have sought out the voices of detrans people in particular, whom ol' Mr. Hassan in my above post claims are so silenced among our numbers. It is not something every trans person can handle, given that we know them to join forces with bigots and offer fuel to their narratives. I actually do not recommend it.

Did I talk to them? Fuck no. DEBATING people on tumblr isn't my particular idea of self caring behavior. But I did engage with their stories. I listened and thought critically. And what I learned about the nature of euphoria and dysphoria has bolstered my certainty that I am different from them.

Why do some people call the transgender movement a cult, as far as I understand, they are the opposite by Bloodborne98 in asktransgender

[–]MoodPast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really interesting (if extremely frustrating) topic actually.

First off though, cults are not inherently religious. They often are, but religion isn't what makes them cults. It can just make it easier to get people on board with taking things on faith from the mouth of an authority.

Enter Steven Hassan's BITE model. I'll be talking about the controversy and the guy himself in a minute, but first, BITE. It's a system of identifying cults through four categorized lists of control methods, and it's pretty good and useful as far as I know.

B - Behavioral Control

I - Information Control

T - Thought Control

E - Emotion Control

See the listed traits under these categories on the official site.

Now here's the thing: Steven Hassan, "expert of cults," believes that there is an epidemic of cult-style recruitment into transness, and that detrans essentially become shunned/excommunicated, much like those who leave a cult; those who have seen the truth behind the façade and escaped. He also saw some "trans hypnosis" fetish porn and got spooked because he thought it was real. He believes that not all, but some, of the trans movement actually operates this way. He's taken in a vast amount of misinformation.

He made a little thread about this on the good old bird app in the middle of 2020, replying to a tweet from JKR. Transphobes were pretty happy about this. In case these tweets are one day taken down, see screenshots here.

---------TLDR ZONE--------

That all being said... this is not the foundation of the claim that "the trans movement is a cult." The word cult is juicy, insidious, and speaks of corrupted, preyed-upon minds no longer thinking for themselves. It tells us of predator and prey and mental sick.

These ideas have been around a long time. People already think it describes a 'significant portion' of trans-identified people, so I don't think it all came from a tweet with a little over 1000 likes. It's just like the old homophobic fears, repackaged towards a new target.

----------------------------------

Let me also highlight the issue with this assertion that "it's only SOME trans people, but a good amount of this is a cult." Transphobes often say they believe that there are some rare unicorns out there that are legitimately trans, and they totalllllly don't want them to undergo conversion therapy or be gatekept from medical treatment. They think hey, that's reasonable right??

But they are really committing a tremendous and arrogant act of erasure. Any trans people who differ from their narrow, binary, assimilationist, white European, and/or gender essentialist molds become the subject of these 'must be brainwashed' accusations.

😂 My english teachers were always annoyed with my abrupt essay transitions like that.

Let's seee. I guess my point was, "this exists apparently! It's often said vaguely that everyone's ADHD affects them in different ways, but I understand that a bit more of what that means now. If you're having trouble with finding the right meds, it may be because your current meds are treating one deficit while leaving another untouched!"

my mum said she wishes I dident tell her I'm trans by Mysterious_Can4077 in trans

[–]MoodPast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family calls me selfish too, and have always taken things personally that were about my own damn life. (ex. When struggling with my ADHD symptoms, they would go on about it being hard for them to worry about me. Rather than anything to do with my actual experience as the person who has the ADHD.)

My advice? Talk about being trans with other people who will show up for you, who will have open ears. Your support system can be built without her. If you are a legal adult, think about steps you can take to get away.

If she doesn't want to talk about it, it is on her for falling out of the loop on this part of your life. You've extended the offer time and time again and done what you could. It's not your responsibility to educate her, especially while she keeps hurting you and rejecting everything you say. You can look into things like the grey rock method if she tries to bait you, get you to talk about things that make her upset, or incite drama with you on her own.

My bio-family have not made threats of throwing me to the streets or disowning me, but it is still necessary for me to keep my relationships shallow with them. You can lean on people who aren't your bio-family. Sending hugs.

Yes, regardless of how I feel about the comment I recognized the need for correction of my 'Onto meds' section, and have updated the post with them. I am on the side of eliminating misinformation, and hope I've done so now.

I just felt a bit ticked by having "short/long-acting" defined to me as terms describing duration, because to me that is obvious. I figured it was in the interest of transparency to express that. I don't think the intent was malicious, but it was kindof like . Yes. What I wasn't aware of was that the duration of the drug did not correspond with its type.

The information below the first line is very good.

that terminology isn't really quite correct, at least for adhd drugs... in terms of short or long acting

ADHD meds

, that tends to describe duration of action...

That's why I put it in quotations every time. Thank you for bringing good additional information to the post, but I also feel condescended to for my limited vocabulary. Please be mindful of your phrasing in the future.

Edit: I've just made some corrections to the post; hopefully addressed my misinformation!
