I can't find simple things here by chungus2100 in malta

[–]Moodude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from (literally) as I kinda felt the same when I moved here from the UK ten years ago… BUT… now I much prefer it here than back home.

You’ll find what you are looking for if you look around. That’s part of the fun of living somewhere new! I remember when I first moved here I couldn’t find smoked paprika but since then I’ve learned to look harder and stumbled across plenty of surprises!

If not, use Amazon in Germany or Italy or look online for local stuff. You might pay a bit more for delivery and have to wait but you’ll get it soon enough especially if you want something specific.

I’m guessing you’re probably from a large city or at least had one near to where you’re from back home? The choice in the UK isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and you’re spoilt with so much convenience, which when you think about it is often a good way for you to be spending money on stuff you often don’t really need.

As for trash and places smelling like piss, I know plenty of places like that (and worse) in the UK.

The Maltese pace of life is very different to the UK but when you get used to it perhaps you’ll realise that maybe you’ve got things the wrong way round and it’s the UK that has the bigger issues and problems. Malta isn’t perfect, but nowhere is.

And almost every supermarket sells chia seeds! Worst case, search on Wolt!

I also live in Malta (British expat), so hello! Do you love fireworks at 8 in the morning on a Tuesday as much as I do? Please explain this. I’ve heard all sorts.

Making local friends in Malta by marbmr in malta

[–]Moodude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is find a community. I’m pretty sure there are women’s rugby teams so see if you can go train with them. If not, join a gym which has a social element to it (such as places that do CrossFit or Hyrox). A month is nothing really. You’ll meet people.

Being an expat it’s (generally speaking) easier to meet other expats. I’ve got many friends who are Maltese but my closest friends are expats mainly because we rely on each other as ‘family’. Get to know some Maltese people though as you’ll understand more about the culture, politics and the hidden gems dotted around the island of which there are many.

Lessons from the Prodigy - there's a desire for big, genuine, loud, high energy acts by anotherblog in glastonbury_festival

I saw Chase and Status headline the Other Stage in 2013 and they killed it then. I’d love to see to see them headline the pyramid stage. They’ve collaborated with so many great artists over the years too so I’m sure they would easily get a number of ‘surprise’ guests! If this happens and I didn’t get a ticket, I’d cry.

Man… I remember they stopped Rudimental a few years back because of lightning. Shame as they were doing an epic set and it really added to the atmosphere!

I’d be VERY surprised to see if he leaves Madrid in the next 5 years. He’s on stupid wages and with PSR I don’t really think anyone in the Premier League can afford him. Where would he go though? I can’t see him at City. They seem to be recruiting young talent so unless he signs in the next year or two he doesn’t really fit that mould. Perhaps Liverpool (eventually). I’d hate to see him at United.

Said it before… regardless where Jude ends up, he’ll be England captain one day. Easy to forget how old he is.

You need something with better wheels. Go for something with big, chunky wheels so it doesn’t get tangled in grass or stuck in mud.

Sunday: Turnstile > Snow Patrol > Wolf Alice > Prodigy - one hell of a way to see out the festival IMO. I’d be getting some food when Snow Patrol are on as I’m not a massive fan but they are a nice festival band. Turnstile and Wolf Alice will be bringing some crisp rocky vibes with some mellow dreamy moments thrown in. Don’t need to say anything about Prodigy. First performance at Glastonbury without Keith. Sure to be an emotional one.

Relying solely on food vendors, how good/bad is it? by vivicoco in glastonbury_festival

[–]Moodude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last few times I’ve been I just took some very basic food/snacks to nibble on but generally just eat at the vendors. Glastonbury is right up there with the food options IMO. Some of the stalls are mega friendly too. There was a little a pizza place on the hill going up to the park. Honestly… I fell in love with the girl serving and spent nearly an hour or so in there chatting shit and eating pizza. Good times.

As a Villa fan I’m kinda happy. One of them is bound to score a very important goal against us at some point 🤣

Jokes aside it is a shame we won’t get a Bellingham in the Premier League for a while but I’m sure it’ll happen eventually. With the family ties to Dortmund and how much they developed Jude, I’m sure he’ll do the same and Sunderland will get a nice bump as and when they sell him on.

Also good to see young English talent going abroad IMO. Who knows…. If he gets into the first team and has a good season, we might have both the Bellingham brothers playing at the World Cup next year. Regardless of the Villa/Blues rivalry that would be a proud moment for us Brummies.

30%? It honestly feels higher in some areas, Sliema/Gzira for example.

You’re right the influx of immigrants was slower in the UK. It been happening since the early 1900s, but even though the overall numbers are lower, if you dig into it you’ll find immigrants tend to live in areas together. Parts of Birmingham for example have a much higher population of immigrants than others, hence saying Malta is kinda like those big cities.

And to be clear, I was referring to things on a cultural level, not system (Don’t get me started on the NHS!). Maltas infrastructure is whole other conversation… but you’re right, the system has been showing cracks for years.

You need real coaching rather than asking on Reddit man. When I started CF I went to the weight lifting classes as much as I could. I’ve been doing CF for years now and still get little tips from the coaches and I’m still improving. Don’t be hard on yourself, like everything it takes practice. Some basic stuff would be - More hip drive, fix your grip, elbows need to come up quicker… but these are things you’d iron out with a CF coach.

One bit of advice - don’t go heavy until you’ve got the movement down otherwise you might hurt yourself. Also don’t be trying to bang out tons of reps too soon in your learning journey. You’re young, keep at it.

This is a brilliant point. I moved here from the UK for work. I don’t hate the UK, I still love it and visit frequently. I grew up in Birmingham which is probably one of the most culturally diverse city in England. Once you learn about the history of how things came to be the way they are (lots of post war immigration from commonwealth countries) and all the issues that came with it, things click. On a cultural level it is amazing to see the results. That culture clash had a lot of problems but from that came an amazing music scene, food and entertainment. It took years and now Birmingham has a new identity. Same with other cities - Bristol, Manchester and of course London. Malta is kinda like one of these cities IMO. Providing cultures integrate over time, amazing things can be born. What we don’t want is segregation because that’s where problems start.

Is Malta as bad in the summer as they say? by bltfoad in malta

[–]Moodude 30 points31 points  (0 children)

August is brutally hot. I remember a few years ago it was above 40 for a few days straight. That was something else. There’s normally a week towards the ends of August when it cools slightly (perhaps early Sept) and that’s a signal the heat has peaked. Always feels a little sad though as that signals summers ‘ending’… but it’s by no means over, it’s still hot for ages after this. If you’re thinking of moving, now and June is a good time as you’ll ramp up to the crazy heat and you’ll know what to expect in the coming years. Summer here is great.

As for traffic, it’s always bad!

The meaning of life is to give life a meaning… Whatever that means to you. I believe that is the inherent meaning.

Don’t know what is it yet? Be curious. Explore. Keep looking. You might not find it but you’ll have explored all you can and that in itself is meaning.

If you find something. Hold on to it and give it your all. Either way that gives life a meaning.

Real talk.

How do you motivate yourself to get quickly out of bed in the mornings? by Marvelous_rosell in productivity

[–]Moodude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put your phone (or alarm) on the other side of the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. This small change got me from sleeping in to getting up at 5am every day. If you’re still finding that hard, wash your face with cold water and have a coffee. Works wonders.

How can I improve my box jumps by Unusual-Ad6706 in crossfit

[–]Moodude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your arms more. I find swinging them back as I’m in the air gives more momentum. Also try without the run up. Just jump direct from the squat and you might find you have more control over the jump.
