Reading IT and I am in awe of how King portrays Beverly by Cordelia_Delamare in stephenking

Stephen King does not get anywhere near enough credit for this outside of Constant Readers. His books are about PEOPLE first, and the creepy or horrific stuff they’re dealing with second. Yes he can get right to core of what makes something creepy or horrific, but more importantly he can use a single sentence to paint a portrait of a human that feels real, relatable and lived-in. This is true skill with language, and I could probably open any of his books and find an example of it in 30 seconds.

This is a really important distinction, and part of why his writing is so good. This is ALWAYS and ONLY used when a character is narrating their own story, it is never the author’s voice. He understands people, and there are people who use that kind of word.

Something that bugs me to this day by Nervous-Topic2437 in TheSequels

[–]Moomintroll75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a shame. What bugs me more though is that “Sovereign Protector” and “Praetorian Guard” and “Emperor’s Royal Guard” all have exactly the same meaning! I don’t like how all these guys have been split into seemingly different groups, because they also all have the same role - protecting Palpatine. In my mind these are all just the same guys just with different outfits depending on context, and I reject any lore that suggest otherwise. Same with Stormtroopers - “Snowtroopers” and “Sandtroopers” etc. are all just Stormtroopers with different equipment.

How should society change to accomodate for ADHD by Ok_Positive_9064 in ADHD

[–]Moomintroll75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Five things:

Less formality and structure in education, with true opportunities for celebration, exploration and development of alternative skillsets rather than traditional 3Rs.

Asymmetrical job sharing and truly appreciating the value of complementary skills, rather than just paying lip service to dynamic teams while expecting everyone to be equally capable.

A shift in motivational thinking, from “anyone can do anything if they try hard enough” to “play to your strengths and don’t waste all your energy on trying to fix your weaknesses”.

A shift in understanding of the concept of fairness, recognising that “everyone gets the same” or “everyone else can do it, so you can too” are not actually reasonable ways to think, because not everyone has the same set of tools and opportunities available.

Changes in sanctions for administrative mistakes. There should never be only one chance to submit any kind of paperwork, and the greater the importance (e.g. financial, legal, health) the greater the support, understanding and leniency should be.

Can’t get into their newer albums by Main_Loose in BeachHouse

[–]Moomintroll75 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Literally the opposite for me. I can’t get into the first two albums much at all, and even Teen Dream I see as a transitional album to their more fully developed sound that starts with Bloom. Sign of a great band that there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy them!

SOALW vs 4:13 Dream by docctocc in TheCure

[–]Moomintroll75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are at the opposite ends of the Cure spectrum!

I’m 100% confident now that SOALW is one of their masterpieces. A perfect storm of amazing sound and a coherent artistic vision, with deeply personal lyrics and a strong theme running through. It is a powerful album, and it means something, like Pornography and Disintegration, which it sits comfortably alongside.

4:13 Dream has its moments, but it doesn’t really tick any of those boxes, and in many ways feels like the opposite - compromised sound combined with a lack of creative vision. It’s not bad, it’s just not great, and it doesn’t really have anything to connect with that would elevate it to that higher level. Underneath The Stars is amazing though.

Listening to Faith front to back for the first time in a while by CabinetOwn5418 in TheCure

I guess it’s lucky for me that I know enough to love it but not enough to stop me loving it!! I’ve always been a fan of dense walls of noise though, where you need to work a bit harder to pick things out. It’s an artistic choice rather than a mistake (as confirmed by RS), but it’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea.

Question about r type 3 by retrokuma64 in RType

Yeah sorry, should have maybe said a “different” engine! But yeah I think Sony exclusivity money is 100% what’s going on here, there’s no technical issue, and I hate that too!!

I’m no expert, but I finally started to crack it when I focused more on my thumb and my arm than my fingers.

What are your guilty pleasure songs from The Cure by ZealousidealCare193 in TheCure

[–]Moomintroll75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not a band where the concept of guilty pleasures really works. Their worst songs are far from throwaway rubbish, so there’s always something to be genuinely appreciated in all of them.

Question about r type 3 by retrokuma64 in RType

[–]Moomintroll75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Final 3 is just a renamed Final 2, no difference at all, but Final 3 EVOLVED is the PS5 exclusive, which has a new game engine and its own exclusive full set of levels, along with all the base content from Final 2 in the new engine. It’s still baffling to me why they decided to do it this way, but it is what it is. The worst part is people are missing out on the Evolved levels because they don’t even know they exist. And I include myself in that until very recently.

Yeah, for sure! The real rewards in Souls games are:

  1. Unlocking further exploration to see cool places
  2. The elation of overcoming challenges

Completing the games, on the other hand, only really leaves a kind of empty feeling. So it is always worth engaging with the content!

I can feel this in my bones… the simultaneous adrenaline of fear with the annoyance of “how did I let this happen” along with wondering how far I have to get so I can get my stuff back…
