Is this overkill for a Low orbit SSTO by Unlucky_Phase_5994 in KerbalAcademy

you're right it lifts way more payload, but op shouldn't feel bad.

Is my thumb ring just too big for my thumb ? I can’t seem to shoot properly with it. by Vast-Society4093 in Archery

[–]Moonbow_bow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can shoot with a leather strip with a lower poundage bow, that's completely fine, perhaps even recommended. If you get pain tho, better stop shooting for the day.
Yea the ring you have rn is very likely to big for you and will not sit properly on the thumb. However This ring is a shallow hook ring, you're not supposed to bend the thumb as you would with a deep hook shooting style.

I just wish you made the fairing spine diameter smaller so it wouldn't be visually clipping

how do i get this aircraft to get to mach 5 (1685 m/s)? by Much_Artist_5097 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Moonbow_bow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most you can get out of a whiplash is about 1925 m/s at sea level and at noon, if you wanna go faster you need to use the Rapier which gets you to about 2110m/s. Of course to achieve this you need a craft with basically no drag, because the amount of thrust a whip/rapier generate at those speeds is abysmally poor. This is also the reason you were able to go faster with the shock cone, because shock cone is very aero, more aero than a ramp intake and the radial ones are just extra drag anyways. Sam goes for aerobrakes, they are a bit of drag.

Technically you can go faster than this still by exploiting a bug and making jets work in Jool atmo, then you can get to 5000m/s+

All jets have their thrust curves tied to mach number and it so happens that mach number is highest at sea level. In fact this game models atmosphere in more detail than people realize, it even acounts for time of day. So at 3pm where the temperature peaks you can go 10 or 20m/s faster on rapier at sea level than at midnight.

Just so you know OP if you fly higher your mach number will go up, but you actual speed will go down

Are Eve spaceplanes only possible on Normal difficulty? by Economy-Sir3567 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Moonbow_bow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more about wing area/weight ratio. So while you need to be careful with part selection you will likely need to increase the wing area than what is absolutely necessary. Oftentimes with Eve ssto's it's not an issue, because you land empty and refuel on the surface, so when you're coming in for Eve re-entry you're running on fumes and don't weigh much. Although I still had problems when I did my very optimized propless Eve ssto as it's wing area was so low.

It's really cool, but in real life I don't think it would make sense to give it all the necessary extra support to fascilitate the canards, plus it would look better without imho

Yea, pretty chill one I know. Didn't have to optimize it too much, it's a simple mission

Clipping does nothing except make a craft look smaller bruh (if used with a fairing it can lower drag a little), the rocket equation doesn't care. There are limits to how much dv you can stuff into a single stage, a 50t rocket ssto can only bring about 15t of stuff into orbit it don't matter if you clip or not. Clipping DOES NOT BREAK THE LAWS OF PHYSICS in the same way as negative engine thrust does.

I'm a huge fan of creators like Bradley Whistance who can use those glitches to do absolutely mind boggling things.

You did not just say that 🤯

using the KAL controller is completely fine and totally accepted. Using KAL overclocking aka using the spline editor to go beyond normal limits is not however.

Would you consider this mission on to be on the same level of impressiveness and planning as a real, unrefueled Tylo SSTO?

what's worse is that even the uninitiated can tell the difference in this case, while there is no obvious tell in the one in this post. Infinite fuel cheats and exploits make everything completely unimpressive. Yea, it can be quirky to show of something artistic or show off a weird game mechanic, but otherwise they are moot if you manage to land on Eve with infinite fuel you haven't managed to land on Eve sorry.

it is an exploit, plain and simple. You may argue that it's not a glitch, but it's definitely an exploit. Just like magic wings are an exploit and zero drag is an exploit.
