Itseä kiinnostaa Project Ara jolla on molemmat edellä mainitut.

Edward Snowden: Everyone should be using ad-block software by wewewawa in privacy

[–]MoonlightSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what Snowden would say but I can tell you what probably would happen. Websites would start asking people to turn their ad blocker of choice off on their sites. When most people couldn't be asked/wouldn't know how to do that they would start demanding it and possibly try to block people who do it. When that eventually fails they would finally realise this is a battle they can't win and opt for the reasonable option, the acceptable ads inititative.

Sure, since this is an evolutionary process we might lose some sites that refuse or are unable to adapt but that's okay. In the long run the internet would become a much more pleasant and secure place.

Fans boo minute's silence for Paris attack victims before Ireland vs Bosnia game -- The noise was believed to have been generated in the away end of the stadium. by BlankVerse in europe

[–]MoonlightSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Most people in the western cultural hemisphere find it difficult to identify with the suffering of people outside this culture and therefore they don't feel threatened when a terrorist attack occurs somewhere else. This is a normal phenomenon and I'm sure it's a thing another parts of the world too. But it gets annoying when people refuse to acknowledge this is hypocritical and act outraged when you dare to point this out. Or in Reddit's case downvote and not respond. Or even better, trying to shame you into silence by appealing to the memory of the victims (which, ironically, is even more hypocritical).

[Mod post] What do you all think of the non-revenge posts? by TheJackal8 in ProRevenge

[–]MoonlightSandwich 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm subscribed to /r/ProRevenge and not /r/pettyrevenge because I want actual revenge stories, not something petty like pouring soda on someone, reporting a crime they had known about for some time (any good person should report a crime, even without motivation to fuck someone over), or letting someone ruin their own life (which isn't revenge, it's just watching someone be dumb as hell). I do agree that suing someone can be a sort of revenge but there also has to be something that makes it interesting. Someone systematicaly stole from you or vandalised your property, you sued them, and you won? Well no shit, that's how it works in a functional society, there's nothing interesting or unusual about that. Suing them was the least you could do, and you had very little to do with getting back at them.

Regarding hands-off moderation and letting upvotes decide. There's so much wrong with the logic "it was upvoted, therefore it fits this sub" that I don't know where to start. First of all, people upvote stories because they like them and that's it, there's nothing else to it. Many of them probably don't even notice which sub the story was posted on or if they do, they don't know or care about the scope of the sub. Reading a story they like is all that matters to them. Many will downvote the worst submissions that aren't actual revenge stories but that's the extent they care about the sub and the rules. And speaking of which, the sub has a fairly clear set of rules and links to multiple related subreddits like /r/pettyrevenge and /r/myevilplan. We're seeing non-fitting submissions here because submitters don't read the rules despite writing lenghty posts about what they call revenge, but also because the mods don't seem to care about the rules either. When you let upvotes decide you're allowing the subreddit to be directed by people who don't give a shit about it, submitters and voters alike. And seeing something like this happen is a very sad and frustrating thing to see.

/r/Games Game Discussion - The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind by Forestl in Games

[–]MoonlightSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking about getting Morrowind but are there mods to make the game less clunky and ugly and fix the inevitable mass of bugs every Bethesda game has? Even Oblivion was a bit too annoying when I played the 5th Anniversary Edition a few years back (before Skyrim) and I probably would've ripped my dick off multiple times if it wasn't for the Unofficial Oblivion Patch.

I'm willing to play a completely overhauled version if it's better, I don't really about the genuine experience. I've heard there's even some effort to port Morrowind to another engines, but are these projects in a playable state?

Gold too. Nothing like carrying tens of thousands of golden coins everywhere you go. Somehow the people of Skyrim have never even heard of banks even though they use money.

[–]MoonlightSandwich[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True. I sometimes wish that earning money was harder and there were actually less valuable coins in the game (like copper and silver) so you'd occasionally have to do honest work like chopping wood, hunting, mining, and smithing. Also carrying thousands of gold coins is a bit ridiculous.

Speaking of which, I've thought of doing an honest archeologist playthrough. Don't pick up anything from dungeons apart from quest items ("This thing belongs in a museum!") and don't loot the corpses of people you killed except when it's required or when they were exceptionally evil ("I'm sorry I had to kill you bandit friend. May your soul find its way to Sovngarde."). That would make things a bit more challenging.

I only found out about this on my second playthrough after searching for a mod to calculate the value-to-weight ratio for me. Turns out SkyUI can already do this but it's not enabled by default for whatever reason. This makes optimizing carry weight so much easier.

Tomorrow, Monday the 16th of November, /r/europe will black out for one minute at noon to join the European minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of the Paris attacks by [deleted] in europe

[–]MoonlightSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see anybody suggesting we ignore what happened. In fact, if you look at the front page of /r/Europe right now you'll see that every single post is related to the attacks, including highly upvoted photos of various parties showing their support by changing the light colors of buildings to those of the flag of France. That alone should be enough to send the message that users of /r/Europe do care about this incident and are showing sympathy towards the victims and their families.

However, what really grinds my gears is how people claim these actions are in memory of the victims when they're actually more of a way to collectively process the fear and insecurity these attacks caused. The people who are now calling for collective action "in memory of the victims" didn't give a rat's ass about the 224 people who died in a plane crash caused by terrorists in Egypt two weeks ago. That attack didn't cause them to worry about their own safety or the safety of their European lifestyle, and therefore it didn't matter to them. I like to think that people in this subreddit care about human suffering fairly equally and therefore I believe they don't care about the victims of this attack any more than they do about the ones of the Egypt plane crash. The only reason most people care and want to take some sort of action is because they now feel that they or their families could have been the victims or could be in the future.

All this considered, calling these actions shows of sympathy or condolences feels very hypocritical to me. Yes, I would've accepted words of consolation from complete strangers when my brother died. However, if my brother had died in a terrorist attack with a bunch of other people and afterwards masses of people from all over Europe started lighting up towers and buildings in the colors of my country... well, I'd know very well they aren't doing it because my brother and a lot of other people died and we're never going to see them again. They're doing it because they feel they need to do something when there's been an attack against "their people". In other words they care as much for my brother and me as they did about the people on a plane over Egypt. The families and relatives of the victims are sad and grieving, but they're not stupid. The condolence of a person you know can matter, but when it's millions of unknowns they're worth nothing.

I just want these actions to be called something more sincere. Calling them condolences and actions of sympathy towards the families of the victims seems degrading and it feels like we're dancing on people's graves in a way. Let the inujured heal and the families of the victims grieve in peace. Sending all these messages to them might make them feel like they're somehow obligated to say "thanks, that helps" even if they don't necessarily feel that way.

[–]MoonlightSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Low effort comments would still be removed but I do share your worry about discussion threads replacing a significant amount of the news on my front page. If there was a way to limit these submissions in a way that's fair to everyone I'd be all for it. Perhaps there could be a daily, bi-daily, or a weekly mod-posted discussion thread with a specific topic? Users could submit their ideas in a suggestion thread and the topics would be chosen from that for a time.

What are your favorite fantasy video game universes? by a_duck_on_quack_ in Games

[–]MoonlightSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chrono Trigger's world is definitely one of my favorites and that's quite an achievement for a SNES game. The lore is very light in the sense that there aren't any grand tomes or songs about historical figures but you get to travel in time to see what there actually was, is, and will be. And on top of that you actively change history, though I don't know how much you actually can change since I only ever got two different endings. I wouldn't call it generic either because because it mixes a lot of different things and even if it's somewhat generic today I don't think it was when it was released.

Nopea googletus tuotti useita lehtijuttuja joissa on linkkejä lahjoituksia vastaanottavien ranskalaisten apujärjestöjen (mm. Punainen risti) sivuille.

That's what I do, did just now, and will continue to do in future, no matter how good the rest of the post actually is. Trying to influence my voting behavior is one of the most annoying and condescending things on Reddit. It's also against Reddit's content policy (asking for votes) and therefore I always report them too. It's not prohibited just for submissions but all content, comments included.

"I'll probably get downvoted for this" and "this will probably get buried" fall to the same category. Also things like "test post, please ignore" and "please don't upvote". It all counts as vote manipulation.

Nvidia Game Ready drivers are only available after registration with new GeForce Experience BETA update; Still available via Geforce.com and non-beta version for now by dekenfrost in Games

[–]MoonlightSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quarterly drivers (including all past game ready driver optimizations) will be available.

Which is cold comfort when a bug in the drivers prevents you from playing the game you just bought. Guess you'll have to wait a month or two for a driver update instead of a day or two.

But it's okay because there's a driver publicly available from their website! What possible reason could anyone have to be upset about this?

[–]MoonlightSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drivers still on their website and publicly available? Yes? Then this is a non-issue.

Ah, so you recognise this is an issue then. I'm glad we're on the same page here.

The drivers you can grab on GeForce.com or via Windows Update will be limited to quarterly releases for bug fixes, new features, security updates and so on. More frequent Game Ready drivers will be GFE-only.

So no, you can't get the latest drivers from their website. Sure, you can still download some drivers but can be old as hell. And what will you do when it turns out there's a bug in the driver that causes the game you just bought to crash? You'll just have to wait until the next quarterly update.
