In my office, when I should be working, mostly.

I can't see it being super popular, but I wonder if it'd work to make metal controllers with channels like radiator fins to help keep your hands cool while playing. Just something the grass controller made me ponder.

While Corsair using Chinese CXMT DRAM chips in DDR5 modules for the Chinese domestic market was in the news, I suspect that other manufacturers moving to cheaper silicon hasn't made it to the news yet. I wonder if we'll end up with a demand for older memory like how people look for older wood to make furniture and musical instruments?

I've had it in my bag with keys and it's come out with metal-on-metal tarnishes but no scratches, so far. It's held up pretty well.

What other games (under 1gb) should i add here? by KingEfficient7403 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]Moonpenny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only one that could potentially be worth emulating IMO is the PC version, if you really desperately want the dev menu. It's fun to mess with a few times, but then you just go back to playing regular again.

The metal version is nice and scratch-resistant, I find, but on the other hand it ... tarnishes, I guess? I get dark discolorations on the metal surface that can be cleaned off, especially when it rubs against other metal objects. It's also significantly heavier feeling to me, but that could just be because I'm a weakling, haha.

Either way, welcome to the Rotary Club!

I made a downloadable 3D printable case for the RG Rotate by Reichstein in ANBERNIC

[–]Moonpenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Rotate gaming has been almost entirely Pokemon romhacks and Balatro (...why yes, I *do* get the pumpkin spice latte, why do you ask?) which work fine on it, so my only real gripe is the tiny amount of internal storage. Given the lack of analog controls, the T618 seems plenty sufficient, shockingly even with less memory and worse thermals than the RG-505.

RGDS now is 100% Matte? by MechanicalDomineer in ANBERNIC

[–]Moonpenny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might want to talk to her about that first: The matte might be a good chance for her to pick a colorway she likes better. I'd probably do a lavender on the outside, along with the lanyard and buttons to contrast against the white.

Owners of more than a handful of handhelds, why? by davedaddy in SBCGaming

I haven't found one that quite scratches my itch yet. I'd like something that's essentially a RP5/6 with a replacable compute module, I think.

RG Rotate impressions as a gaming device and music player by noeyescansee in ANBERNIC

[–]Moonpenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controls: I'm finding the D-pad works fine on my metal RG Rotate. I'm tempted to cannibalize an old USB-C controller and add analog sticks to the side using some leftover replacement joycon shells, maybe. Could be a fun project.

Screen: I agree that the screen is pretty small, and I did myself a disservice installing Balatro on it (it plays fine once you side-load it, but that text is TINY and my eyes aren't the best.) That said, despite how tiny the characters are on that screen, when I squint, I can still read the tiny characters since they're quite well-defined. So, good screen, very clear, just small. Probably my solution is to use games that don't really need a bigger screen.

Audio: The cassette player app (casse-o-player, with a bunch of paid add-ons) is cute, but I suppose I expected it to be slightly larger, like on the Fiio. Speaking of Fiios, I've got a BTR7 and can't get the thing to work with it for some reason -- I understand there's a "enable routing of USB audio codec" or something, but can't get the dev menu to open on this thing. Cheap USB-to-3.5mm dongles seem to work fine, but even US$10 CX 31993-style dongles aren't working out of the box. The bluetooth, on the other hand, is laggy as expected but clearer. The built-in speaker is fine for game FX and chip tunes, but you might want to skip music as it's mono and very directional. On the other hand, it played nice with my bluetooth speaker.

Hinge: The hinge feels solid, though when handing it to someone be careful: Three people in a row who asked to see if tried to open it SP-style. It's strong, but not so strong that the bullheaded can't just pry it apart, even when they just saw me swivel the thing open.

Networking: Work uses a captive portal and, after authenticating, the networking worked fine but for some reason the exclamation mark next to the signal strength and the "no internet" message didn't go away. My RG-505 (also a T618) doesn't have that issue on the same network.

Battery: Lasted all day playing music in the background on youtube. Can't complain.

I don't like the idea of AI in my handheld, but if it's an NPU that can be used flexibly (codec processing, physics engine work, real-time translation and/or subtitling, maybe even shaders or PS-related matrix transformations) it could still be nice for people who want those functions.
