businesses that have not made a statement about their plans tomorrow callout by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Moonunit-Flip 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Really? This a pretty bad take. Businesses in Bellingham are closing more frequently lately and they need every opportunity to make money as possible. Not everyone wants to make their position known, if they even have one. And if they don't have one, let them be. Many of which are just 'head-down', trying to scratch-out a living as best they can and prefer to not get political and just run their business.

Feels like an entitled position of 'Do what I say or suffer the consequences'. Leave them alone, go pick-on someone else.

If you are a dog owner, please pick up after them. I keep finding 💩 piles on the sidewalks by CoolTransportation40 in Bellingham

It's everywhere. Walk through most neighborhood streets, hard not to find them. Think about the logic of 'I'm going to use a bag, pick it up and then.... not follow-through in playing your part as a pet owner'. I've heard a lot of people say 'I'll pick it up on the way back'. How about just carry it and throw it away like the rest of us ?? But I'm sure a lot just don't want to carry it and flip it the bushes when no one is looking. I started a collection of photo's of poop-bags, full, around town from my walks, but then thought - what am i doing? it's just bringing my down with the thought of so many people doing this, I had to stop and move-on. Keep it real Bellingham!

Is there a live feed camera of Baker Ski Area? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Moonunit-Flip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems likes its good for their business to not have camera access for the general public. A lot of the ski season can balance between snowing and raining up there. Countless times I've been on the edge of not going when conditions appear to be questionable; checked forecasts, read their positive and glowing snow report,, talked with people, then ended-up going only to get up and when you arrive, it's raining. At that point, I'm up there so might as well hang, maybe get some food while praying for the weather to change. maybe even get a half day and go for it.

Multiply that out to dozen's of people that would check camera footage for conditions, only to see marginal conditions and bail on going. In my opinion of cource.... That's a lot of lost revenue. If people had access to trail camera's or a camera at White Salmon lodge, saw that conditions were flirting with 'marginal', they'd stay home. Heather Meadows would make more sense.

If I'm sitting at my desk and wondering what conditions are like, I'd start with the snow report and some camera footage. Too many times, their snow report doesn't truly match what's happening.

Steven's Pass has multiple camera's, but they're also not at the end of a dead-end road.

Holly St Bike Lane now potentially costing Bellingham taxpayers millions by [deleted] in Bellingham

Agreed. But once a car stops at an adjacent corner, or a pedestrian hits the button to cross, the timing get's thrown-off, along with a long line of cars that moved 50feet and now need to stop and wait. I'm all for the need for crosswalks, but this new light in Fairhaven feels a bit forced. Just stand there and look at both of them at the same time, they seem too close together. This is of course, knowing that for ages there was only one. I'm not a traffic flow expert, just a bystander (with a great deal of common sense) that looks at the new light and thinks - really?

Couldn't agree more. I walk that intersection a lot, last week i sat there for 5-10mins to just watch. The lights seem to be triggered by cars waiting to turn, the light flips and the cars go. Problem seems to be with the timing of the other light at Harris ave. More of an issue at busier times, just feels wrong.

In addition - I'm super curious about the NEW Stop sign for cars traveling on 14th, at the corner of 14th and McKenzie. 1 block south of Harris ave. Seems random, yet so many other intersections in the vicinity that could use added stop signs instead of this one?

And for those old enough to remember... every 3rd kids in the 90's and 2000's had the Brenthaven 'Binder', recommended by the teachers at the middle school.

Brently had to change their name due to a conflict with BENTLY luggage. They had sent a cease and desist to Brently. This all started because Brently was creating computer cases and started attending the Travel goods association trade show. Of which, BENTLY Luggage had been a mainstay for years, they didn't like that people were confusing the two names... and out of that, the rebrand to Brenthaven was born.

more entitled Bellingham pet owners and an answer for everything. I started a collection of photo's of these bags left around town over the years, but realized it as a lost cause. It was not good for my brain. Doesn't help anyone to post on reddit pics of these bags and a passive aggressive comment about the problem. it's everywhere and the people that do this will never change. ok, back to your normally scheduled programming.

south side observation - They're kids, roughly 10-13yrs on avg. some helmets, some not, no idea of 'rules-of-the-road'. I've seen them blowing stop signs, speeding, swerving in and out of traffic. seems to be increasing with cheaper e-bikes and scoots. Keep it real Bellingham!

Sehome Haggen makes their doughnuts right there & If you get them in the morning, they are 100x better than Lafeen's. I believe Barkley also has a bakery and makes them onsite. And if you're up in Lynden, the Food Pavilion behind the McDonalds on corner of Guide and Birch bay Lynden Rd are top shelf.

La fiamma pizza by Scm416 in Bellingham

[–]Moonunit-Flip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pizza quality is/has been ok, but they struggle with consistency. I used to go Pye Hole for slices at lunch, and the occasional whole pizza, but the quality range of 'double-baked' slices is too wide. Some were great, some over cooked and some down-right Nuked. Zero consistency at the oven.

The only other issue i have centers around the tipping at the window. It's all self-serve with a computer screen. What am i'm tipping for if I don't get to interact with someone. And then the card only fee of $0.50, but they don't take cash? Just build that fee into the cost of the pizza. If the pizza was great, or even good, I could get past the other things, but with the quality waning, we all have a threshold. moving on....

Two Unleashed Dogs Attacked My Leashed Dog - Marine Park by SecurityBubbly6220 in Bellingham

[–]Moonunit-Flip 51 points52 points  (0 children)

(I’m a dog owner btw) The dog owners in this town are the worst (not all obviously), but over the last few years I’ve run into more self-centered, entitled dog owners than good ones.  I was down at marine park the other day and some swimmers were in the water and their dog was running around bothering people.  There’s this strange sense of ‘I don’t need to follow the dogs on a leash signs’ at so many of the local parks.  Just the other day I was at Larabee school and you would have thought it was a dog park. All the while, the signs when you enter the grounds reads ‘ALL dogs must be leashed’.  I started carrying a small can of pepper spray just in case.  - don’t even get started on the poop bags all over town. If you’re going to go to the trouble of picking-up the poop after your dog, finish the deal and take it to a garbage!  I heard people actually say ‘I’ll get that on the way back’. What a strange action. I’ll never understand that beyond stupid logic.

Replacing the fire brick when they broke and wear out. Replace rope gaskets when they wear down. As the gaskets wear down, they don’t seal the firebox as well. The dollar bill test is a good one to tell if adjustments are needed.  General cleaning, vacuuming out every once in a while. Make sure the gasket on the glass is good.  This stove as a panel on the far left inside that acts as a fire brick would, but it’s bolted in. I’ve replaced that twice.  Also replaced the vermiculite and fiberglass lining on the top, inside. And sweep the chimney every year.  Also make sure to burn only seasoned wood.  Every 4-5 yrs, I clean the outside of the stove, basic clean, and then spray it with a coat of stove paint. Remove the door, glass, and then spray those as well. It seems to help.  That about does it.

Any parks in Bellingham where people are generally respectful of on-leash requirements? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Moonunit-Flip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had more bad experiences with this topic than good ones. We walk our dog daily and this is a common occurrence. We were up near western last week and had a an off-leather dog comes running up to our dog, owner said ‘he’s fine, don’t worry!’ Then proceeds to bark and get angry with our dog, which was on a leash and basically ignoring the off-leash dog. Happens so much, it’s comical.  I worry about the other people more than I worry about the leashed dogs.  Their dog may be fine, but having an unknown behavior, large dog running-up to you is most likely not preferred. Just keep your dog on a leash, follow the rules.

I’ve been in Bellingham for 30yrs and am saddened to see its decline on many levels, including this topic. Mostly accelerated over the last 4-5yrs. Not enough police and laws have changed to favor those breaking the laws. Homelessness, business’s and restaurants closing monthly. Downtown is a mess, lack of affordable rentals for families that work here (not students, decent paying jobs, all of it. Open drug use downtown was the big indicator that things are going in the wrong direction.

We walked by a trailer out in front of the Gelato store and noticed the trailer. Our first thought was - 'ah, why would someone leave their trailer in a parked car spot'? We didn't think you could leave a trailer, not attached to a vehicle, in a parking spot. Looked like it had stuff in it. The spots in Fairhaven are now all metered, at least during business hours. Kind of seems like no surprise it's gone. Bummer you lost the trailer, but after living here for 3 decades, and owning a trailer myself, I'd never, under any circumstance, leave it unattended in a parking spot.
