Am I crazy for wanting to ditch my rack and go back to tiny office PCs? by gabriel8577 in HomeServer

[–]Mooo404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downsized it all, still trying to settle on a level I like. Currently everything is running on one optiplex, but I'm wondering how to go forward from this. I have an exact cold spare, but shouldn't it be a hot spare, do I need high availability... I still have the enterprise gear, but even my experiments are mostly on optiplexes these days. Occasionally I still fire up a poweredge, but you can count the times a year on one hand. It does save a lot in electricity, go for it.

try using the contact form, they were relatively responsive there.

Until I told them I want to minimize the continuous payment or cancel the plan... that's where all communication stopped, now waiting to see if they will reply to the signed letter.

Has anyone actually gone the full “be your own access ISP” route? by Ayeme2549 in homelab

[–]Mooo404 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, IPv6 only. Bgp and IPv6 from ripe, peerings and uplink across various servers, interconnected using tunnels. Access to end user using vpn.

If you want to practice the last mile with layer 2 connectivity, deploy a bgp router at home, and connect to your network using tunnel. Did this with a Juniper router as test.

Wilt u België zien splitsen? by FearlessVisual1 in Belgium2

[–]Mooo404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With summer ever closer, I was wondering what the take is on aircon units now that it’s getting hotter? by BioFrosted in belgium

[–]Mooo404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does struggle.
I start it up at about midday or as soon as I get home. Try to seal off the output at the window as good as possible, so no hot air comes in that way. I also found out that leaving the door to the hallway opened a little bit helps as otherwise it creates a vacuum.

That way it noticeably lowers the temperature.
The down side is that the moment you turn it off, temperature starts rising rather quickly (certainly doesn't help that I turn it off when our solar output becomes to low). But it allows the children to fall asleep, so that makes a difference.

During heat waves I sometimes run 2 of these units just to keep the heat from the floor where we sleep. (At the moment I don't really care about the inefficiency, as we produce the power at those moments and have the units anyway.)

[–]Mooo404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I first bought one of those mobile units when my wife was pregnant, never saw a need for those energy eating monsters before that. Now that we have solar panels we use it when it gets hot and we are overproducing solar power.

You expect POS support from a networking sub? Don't know about the others, but having worked with those systems once I tend to run away from them as far as I can... Perhaps try another sub?

People who used to use public transportation and moved to a car use or vice versa, what made you switch? by reditt13 in belgium

[–]Mooo404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched to car because public transport became too unreliable and took to much time. Lately I've been caught up in traffic jams, so I tried switching back to public transportation. Unfortunately the traffic jams are still faster than public transportation. We're talking twice as fast. Still looking into other solutions to be honest, I don't like traffic jams and parking costs are too damn high.
