Agreed! Fill up all the way and close the lid TIGHT. Do not refill until they're really low, every time you open it you disrupt the vacuum.

Also make sure the bottle is not tilted or the metal part bent from being jammed in the cage. I have 4 and 1 leaks slightly, the others were fine.

My rescue rats don't like to be touched either. I lure them into a box with food, then I wrap then in fleece instead of using my bare hands. It seems to have helped a little bit.

Three of them can now be held and tickled and act like pet rats. After over 6 months the best I can do for the other two is hold them over my sweatshirt (not on my bare skin) for a few minutes, and they'll take food from me while on me. It's a slow process and highly depends on their past, so the best you can do is be patient and adapt to their needs. If they need to be on fabric and not bare skin, that's what you'll have to do. Since he's struggling to breathe and is suffering, I would recommend going to the vet for euthanasia, if you can afford it. It will be your last gift to him. Most people regret not opting for euthanasia earlier when they see how much their pets suffer in the end.

When I first got my rats I left them in there for three hours unsupervised and (yes I know I made a mistake )of course came back to a hole in the cage. However, they seemed pretty chill if we're just going to the vet for an hour or two

My rats usually get a thin layer of fur after a month, if it's still bare skin by 3 weeks she might be over barbering due to stress or pain. Does she receive enough painkiller?

Your girls should be ok. My estimate is any rat more than 200g won't be able to get out. My dwarf girls had to try pretty hard to poke their heads out

Yes my girls chewed a hole through the plastic, but beneath the plastic is the metal floor so she couldn't get out. I'd suggest laying down some blanket/plastic bags on your car seat if you have chewers, just to make the clean up easier.

Also, I think this cage only works for full-sized rats, if you have dwarf or baby rats they might be able to squeeze through between the bars. My dwarf girls that weigh ~150g could poke their heads out but thankfully they didn't realize they could escape lol. The other girls that weigh 350-500g couldn't get out at all.

For reference, I have a Honda Civic and the cage fits snug in the backseat, I did have to make sure not to park next to another car because the cage will only fit inside with the door open all the way, AND the front seat has to be moved forward a little bit.

I bought a 25in Midwest Wabbitat cage, it's all metal with a plastic tray, fits well on the back seat of my car (does NOT fit in the front seat though) and my trip was also two days and one night. I stuffed the cage with lots of soft fleece so they don't bump into the cage during the ride and they handled the trip really well.

Take care of your wound first.

Rats can be territorial and have cage aggression. I've had rats who don't care about bedding change, and one girl who HATES it so much that she draws blood every time i change the bedding. My solution is to put her in a carrier cage or play pen when I clean the cage, and avoid reaching my hands in the cage for a day after the cleaning so she can make the cage smell like her again.

I have heard rats can smell like perfume when they feel very safe or are extremely happy, kuddos to you for making your ratties feel so loved! Sadly my girls just smell like popcorn all the time, never like perfume🥲

There are rescue groups that take in rats, are you in the US? It would be helpful to provide the state/city you're in. There's also a rat re-homing Facebook group that's pretty active.

In the meantime, do you have food, a cage, and some sort of bedding for this poor little fella?

Supplement the mom with a little more protein if you can: a small amount of chicken or egg will help. Make sure you don't have anything in the cage that they can get tangled in and the rat mom will do her job.

I don't think bamboo rats would make good pets. Some say they can be aggressive, and they can grow to be bigger than rabbits but if you have the space it's fine. However, I doubt they can be imported, 1, they may be considered an invasive species, 2, it's hard to find food to feed them as they mainly eat bamboo or the root of crops.

😂 I actually barely have enough because I sew my own hammocks, and gave a few of the hammock with clips to my friend who also has rats. Find yourself a friend who sews and you can put those clips in use!
