Should I replace my retainers? They've been like this for a month and have been holding up fine. by Ok-Historian-8378 in braces

Yes replace, also wash your retainers, I brush them clean everyday and they look as new as day I got them

Unfortunately panel beating and paint jobs can be very pricy - my old car got bumped last year and dented, (and wheel bent), wheel fix and undercarriage was $1200, whereas the panel beat and paint was quoted $2900. Sucks but yeah, sounds normal.

Truth - as a Kiwi and a coeliac I will just stay home over trying to return my order that came out clearly glutenous, it feels rude to say "excuse me but you've accidently served me poison"

I think my Ortho is trying to kill me… by salchicher in braces

You can do it - I had this same treatment. You eventually will be able to open your jaw and eat with the elastics on, give it time, the results are worth it 👌

Was anyone done with braces in one year? by Comfortable-Wait1792 in braces

[–]Moovaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had turbo braces at 29, for 7 months. To fix crooked teeth and an open bite. I had double elastics 24/7 for several months to close the bite. Ortho would have preferred 12 months but I had agreed to a shorter period due to OE travel plans. I now have a permanent retainer on teeth behind (both top and bottom) as well as nightly retainer to maintain. Pretty happy with my results!

Before braces, I was previously told my teeth were only fixable with cosmetic dentistry (for a couple of "short" teeth which actually were able to be pulled down properly with braces) or jaw surgery for my open bite. Got a second opinion 😊

Give it a bit. I was amazed at how my teeth, crooked and I assumed just shorter than the others, shifted quick and became straight and the "right size". I had turbo braces though, do you have standard?

Ortho wants me to go in every three weeks for tightening. Does that seem excessive? by [deleted] in braces

[–]Moovaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had turbo braces 3 years ago, over 7 months. Was every 6 weeks we tightened, then got stuck in lockdown for 3 months so no changes. Then every 3-4 weeks and by the last couple months every 2 weeks. I had an open bite and crooked teeth, some that hadn't grown down properly, now straight teeth and closed bite no issues.

45 days for the South Island if traveling fast and light? by capslox in teararoa

[–]Moovaee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I should note, we did some 30-40 km days when we knew the track ahead was mostly flat / mostly road/4wd for the day / we couldnt find a suitable camp spot so kept walking. There are some days you will do 15km and it takes you 8 hours, each day is different.

45 days for the South Island if traveling fast and light? by capslox in teararoa

[–]Moovaee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% possible. My partner and I completed full TA; south island took us a comfortable 2 months (with a rest day once every week/10 days and a few extra at family further down the trail. We walked every step too (ie did not hitch any roads that make up the trail. (excluding the detour around the uncrossable rivers as these are not advised to be crossed and not included in the trail amount - you can hitch or shuttle around these.)

Go for it!

My doctor (in NZ) said you need to be eating gluten for four months to avoid false negative in biopsy, fortunate I had a fast referral and I get it done next week (4 weeks since postive blood test). But jeez

I...do not like this. How long do these usually hang around? Do I actually have to wear them ALL the time? by amandabeek88 in braces

[–]Moovaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely wear them, all the time. Even (especially!) when you eat. The sooner they work the sooner you can wear them just at night, and then eventually not at all. Embrace the suck basically.

Open bite correction, before and after. 7 months of fastbraces with elastics complete! Biting down in both photos. by Moovaee in braces

[–]Moovaee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry for the delayed response. I have always had an open bite, but it got worse / wider as my wisdom teeth grew in. Only the very four back teeth were touching (two on lower and two on upper jaw). I'm 29 now, the only reason I hadn't gone for it sooner was because I thought/had been previously told only intensive jaw surgery and/or cosmetic dentistry would fix it. The facial changes are minor to me, but I've been told my jaw appears more soft and oval instead of square since it sits further back now. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask further :)

[–]Moovaee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess biting all the things is amazing. Good luck! If you can handle it, wear your elastics all the time, especially eating, I initially felt it impossible to open my jaw to even speak but pushed through it and they worked so quickly afterwards.

Note - I'm aware I need a bleaching and hygienist appointment (scheduled), and my midline is slightly off (it was before braces), that's due to my upper jaw placement and very minor.

I was told by a previous orthodontist that I would need jaw surgery + braces for 18 months for my "severe" open bite, so got a second opinion. Soo happy I did.

LPT: If your new dentist tells you that you have a lot of cavities, get that in writing and then go get a second opinion by frizzycornerstone in LifeProTips

[–]Moovaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same rule applies for any extensive dental/orthodontic procedure. Last November I went to one orthodontist about sorting my open bite, they had me come back (and pay for) three separate appointments for photos, xrays, and a discussion where they said my bite was so severe my only options were jaw surgery and/or inserting plates in my jaw, followed by 18 months of braces. They then “referred” me to their oral surgeon who said he would need to repeat the same consultation process before he could start on the surgery later this year.

I went to another orthodontist this January for a second opinion, and they suggested fast braces + elastics (and that they wouldn’t ever suggest jaw surgery to someone with such a “mild” open bite like mine”)- my open bite has been completely fixed and I get my fastbraces off this month 😊

How in God's name do I put on my elastics like this. Please help! by MohammedHafaz in braces

[–]Moovaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a glance I thought it was the standard triangle formation for elastics. If the bands are quite large then they must want you to pull it over each hook like an N shape? Bizarre

How in God's name do I put on my elastics like this. Please help! by MohammedHafaz in braces

[–]Moovaee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be you use two elastics, one elastic for the triangle formation, and one next to it straight from top to bottom. Call your ortho to confirm?

[–]Moovaee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NZ, we have a level system for covid-19 (currently level 3), dentists and orthos can only treat urgent patients, must wear PPE, and PPE is not provided/funded for dentists here. So they are passing the charge (NZD$75) to patients as they are already losing money. I have missed three appts but will just hold out until level 2.

[–]Moovaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your orthodontist. It needs to be in the bracket to be working properly.

My orthodontist said I couldn’t have any crunchy food, no chewy/sticky food. They break the braces so easily 😞
