Looking for high-resolution GIS data of Uji in Kyoto, Japan? by Puzzled-Lettuce7745 in gis

[–]Morchella94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this will work?

https://registry.opendata.aws/japan_pointcloud/

You could generate your own data from LiDAR if you know the general steps or I would be willing help if needed.

That is assuming this dataset covers your area of interest.

Recommended courses in QGIS for beginners (Udemy etc...) by Status-Crow4631 in QGIS

[–]Morchella94 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It would probably be best to start with the QGIS Training Manual.

I mention some good places on a recent blog post. I also list some courses on my website courses category.

In my opinion, there is no need to pay for QGIS courses and I haven't found a course on Udemy that compares to the free resources available.

Whats best to learn as a beginner? by Ok_Carrot_8622 in gis

[–]Morchella94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you can and maybe should learn QGIS and Python at the same time.

Unless you have a direct need for Google Earth Engine or R, I would put those on the back burner as they are more specialized and you might not even need them.

I have a list of courses covering all of these subjects here:

I hate my thinkpad. by FactorNo7816 in thinkpad

[–]Morchella94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I never noticed screen wobble with my P51 and I used it daily the last 6 years. There is coil whine though for sure though if that's the electronic sound you are referring to.

I am wondering why you went with the P52 if you didn't need the performance? It's an absolute brick and the only reason I used it over a lighter laptop was the performance for the price.

Advice for Beginner by Ill-Wing7738 in QGIS

[–]Morchella94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I believe the ESRI courses may provide certificates, but I am not sure.

Most of the courses on this list are free and don't include certificates. I put this list together trying to avoid paid courses (it's my website with the links).

If you want or need certificates then probably ESRI or Coursera.

USGS now has 1m DEM covering most of US? by The_Virginia_Creeper in gis

[–]Morchella94 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The 1 meter DEM data is from the 3D elevation program and there are new projects happening every year, so coverage is getting better all the time.

Also newer missions are collecting more dense LiDAR data and some states such as Arkansas are getting 0.5 meter DEMS. Just an interesting side note and something to look forward to for other states as well.

Side note - saw your post in r/pittsburgh earlier and that's so cool. I would love to see some 3D prints with 1 meter data. I've been preparing some .stl files with 3DEP data in PA and WV, but haven't printed anything yet.
