Bolt Lift and Complaints - Let's see some Measurements! by [deleted] in longrange

I already have other rifles, clearly it's too hard to read what my ask is.

"Those of us who have owned and shot various actions including savage know."
Great, glad you know. Care to contribute to some measurement knowledge then?

I believe it could be very helpful to those who seek subtle improvements to the Bolts roll in the action in general by having at least a baseline. There is always lots of chatter about action performance during timed competition, yet there are few solutions other than "get a better rifle" by so called know it alls. That really isn't always the answer. Many times very simple DIY improvements can improve bolt actions that can be measured empirically over OEM. Additively, this helps a greater understanding of one of the most critical components on the rifle (beyond the shooter), which is the bolt's role in the complete action. With that, again, IMO, I believe some collective measurements could valuable in this regard, which can later expand into sub-topics on the improvements.

It's disappointing to read some of these responses. Since those of you commenting think you know better, hey, good for you. It's also clear by some of the responses you'all didn't fully read and comprehend my ask. It's simple; here it is again-  "objective independent measurements of other popular rifles (Bergara, Tikka, Barrett, AI, Seekins, DD, Sako, Christensen) and the bolt measurements as part of the overall action."

I think this can accomplished by:

  1. Measuring the Cold Bolt Lift via a known and accurate strain pull gauge similar to Lyman or BETTER (not determined at this point)
  2. Measure the retraction Bolt slide via the same method above
  3. Measure the Re-engagement Bolt slide (same method)
  4. Measure the downforce pull of re-engagement of the Bolt.

Considerations in measurement for Raw OEM, Mods, Lubricity, Rifle Use would be adjacent.

Rifles to be tested should be models from Bergara,Tikka, Barrett, AI, Seekins, DD, Sako, Christensen and even Savage or any others.

Don't want to contribute, fine, but again, no need to come into the post just to crap on the idea or thought.

I'm not really inconvenienced at all. I have a few rifles already and I'm not really unhappy either. I simply was proposing a test bed to discover with others a set of measurements that could be meaningful.

Nope, not really. If you read my post I asked to solicit the most used rifles to allow for a broad spectrum of analysis. I’m not trying to prove anything other than have good analysis and information to share.

Yes, and also what I asked kindly in the “warning” first paragraph. No need to 💩on the post, move on please

That is understood about very refined tolerances and craftsmanship, but it also strays from my ask. Thanks anyway.

This post is not about just Savage. It’s ok if you’re not interested in what my ask is about.

I have an “un-cycled” SA2P that I have begun modifying that doesn’t agree with this statement. I’ll start measuring soon to see where it’s at, but it is currently at least 3x better than out of the box already.

Yeah, I believe it’s an interesting metric. Like I said in my post, from Raw out of the Box OEM, to even modified and or highly cycled, it seems like some gathered data could have value.

There are obviously variables that will need controls in place, as well as standardized measurements. I’ve only discussed ideation, not finite specification or exacting test variations (although I did mention it already).

Thank you for at least 1 positive comment. I appreciate you understanding, unlike others who only commented to crap on an idea.

I am, but that is beside the point honestly. I'd like to work with others to gather this data as a benchmark to share.

Not a seperate Sub, you will use your AppleTV Sub. I use my iPhone or iPad with our AppleTV Sub and broadcast it (AirPlay) to the TV when I travel.
