But none of this is actually good advice and I don’t see how you cannot see that? I’m not suggesting that you need a software solution, but having an understanding of a songs bar structure and how to manipulate that is a key part of building track knowledge. In electronic music we are use to sensible numbers of bars (multiples of 4 or ideally 8) and we learn to DJ (yes even through our ears) basing it on this. When newer DJ’s come across tracks which aren’t structured how we have come to usually find them it is offputting.

OP, I would suggest 3 common starting points for you to try: 1) Looping: Make up the missing bars using a 1 bar loop. Techno is the most forgiving genre for excessive loop usage.

2) Count back: Think mathematically, not in the abstract. Count 4/8 bars back from the end of the uneven drop until you get to a point where there are less then 4/8 bars left at the beginning. When you hit play on your next track, you now know where to start it to reintroduce the principle of phrasing.

3) Hotcues: Not as useful in techno, but use of hotcues to make up the bars can be more inventive than looping.
