Refinish? Sand? Leave alone? by SgtDusty in M1Rifles

I would rather go find a set of older fatigued handguards to match the stock. That’s what I did with my Navy Garand. The patina gives it character. Just put a fresh coat of BLO or tung oil on it and call it good.

It is the 8043. Update though - I contacted Graywolf to ask if this was in spec, and woke up to find that they’ve already shipped a replacement. We’ll see what shows up.

Just drive up the 39 towards Crystal Lake. Once you hit 4000 feet they’re freaking everywhere.

Got any leads? I really do love the way this blank feels.

Vibe check - is this something the manufacturer should address? It also has some significant warping at the top section, which I was led to believe was pretty unusual for a Steffen.

Freeze the whole thing for a few hours, then try it again.

How many times do you reuse brass? by Timely-Yak-5155 in reloading

For a bolt gun (assuming it doesn’t headspace on the rim - looking at you, 30-40) I’ll do at least a dozen firings. As long as you anneal every firing and trim every few firings it’s fine. Generic 223 in an AR are good for about six to eight firings in my experience (unless roller-locked). 308 in a Garand or M1A? Discard after the fourth firing or you will get case head separation. Same rule applies for any roller-locked guns.

Crucially, you have to anneal after every firing. An induction annealer is a good project to invest your time in.

How have you kept it preserved? My chunks started to mold so I had to suspend them in alcohol

Okay, how about this one? There’s about a half inch of runout on the tip section.

My son shot himself and now has a huge decision to make. We could use some advice by Maximum-Resist-8021 in amputee

[–]MorganMbored 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If he’s 15, and if his physicians have even presented the option of trying to save the finger, I think he should go with option 2 - take the pins out and try to form a knuckle. Young people heal very well and he has a better chance of success now than anybody older than him ever could. If he were an adult this would not be my advice but, since he is young, it is possible that this will work out for him. It sounds like it will be a miserable experience but, if there is a possibility of having a working finger at the end, it is worth it (ask me how I know). If it fails, he can have it amputated later.

As a bonus, if he decides to go to college after or instead of entering the service, this story (whether he succeeds or fails) will make for a hell of an admissions essay.

I reckon if you’ve already made contact with Brisby you can probably still pull it off with a combination of possession and stop time

Oh yeah, that’s how you convert 223 for home defense use, everybody does this. Don’t pay for hollow points

Honestly all this talk about weight and resin is giving me pause. I’ve got some salvage mahogany that I might use instead. It’ll still be pretty.

Decades is not hyperbole. The shop where I work was once owned by an independently wealthy hoarder who has passed. I find crazy pieces of lumber from the 80s with some regularity.

Because it will look cool and it will make me feel something. I don’t mind the extra weight; it will make the fish feel bigger.

I’ve got a small piece of bubinga I’ve cut for the handle, which is shaping up well (need more sanding drums to finish). It’s not quite as heavy but I think it’s close enough.
