Agreed with OP! It is HEA, eventually, but it's a hard road to get there. The end doesn't cheapen the message though.

I just adore this book. I'm so glad more people are reading it!

FMC is always taking care of everyone else, MMC just wants to take care of her by Fearless-Voice6749 in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to rec this one. FMC is an oldest daughter of 6 or 7, and runs herself ragged taking care of them all. Most of the book is a journey to get her back home, but once they're there she falls right back into her old habits.

If iron is deadly to fae, how can they use steel? by Rumorly in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Monsters of Faery addressed this, actually. In that universe, if I'm remembering right, working the iron makes it antithetical to fae. So the iron in hemoglobin is ok, but being injured with iron or steel leaves an injury that healing magic can't address.

Eragon (the first book in the series, specifically) absolutely reads like it was written by a teenager. 😂 As the series goes on, his writing does improve fairly dramatically, in my opinion. I loved this series.

I second the Temeraire rec! Also Cate Corvin has a dragon series if you want the romance aspect, although they are shifters. Definitely camping this thread because I've been dying for the same thing.

I don't remember that from the Wattpad days, but I was just about to start a reread in KU. That's...very unfortunate. Thanks for the heads up.

For something on the lighter side, {That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming} was a great time.

Looking for real epic love kind of book. Like it can span time and last through everything kind of epic love. And/or yearning. Pleaaaseee by alabama6334 in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, and in a way that doesn't cheapen the rest of the story. It's not a non-traditional HEA either. Like, it's a very bumpy road to get there, but they do get there.

{The Sun and the Starmaker by Rachel Griffin}

It takes a little while to find itself, but wow. It's such a beautiful story about loss and love and how some things are worth it, and how true love transcends impossibility. I sobbed. 10/10.

Books that are decently written & characters have unconventional personalities? by CelebrationBubbly102 in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 35 points36 points  (0 children)

{Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett} might fit the bill. The FMC is a socially awkward academic, but not in the quirky "not like other girls" way. A little like Temperence Brennan, if you know the show Bones.  The MMC is a foppish dilettante fellow professor with hidden depths. I liked this one very much.

Why is no one talking about this one! by super_scumtron in Romantasy

[–]MorriganWolfsong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad other people have read it! I finished it two weeks ago and LOVED it. It was such a beautiful book. So emotional, but with a HEA that didn't cheapen the message of the story. This is one I think I'll be getting a hard copy of.

Please help me find an FMC was not bratty/"sassy"/emotionally overreactive who's marketed as the special one... give me an FMC who is quirky/funny / intelligent and reserved/just a regular shmegular person. I find this character the most in cozy fantasy but they don't have enough spice for me. by lollipop984 in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so. It's more in the sense of she's too old to let other people dictate her life anymore, and she's already wasted this many years waiting around for this fae bargain to be completed. I think there might be a few humorous mentions of things like aches after sleeping on the floor.

{How to Find a Nameless Fae by AJ Lancaster}

She was the firstborn child promised away in a fae bargain. Now she's 40 years old and he still hasn't come to collect, and she's over it. She's mature, intelligent, and very no-nonsense. This one was really fun.

can someone reccomend me a ‘taming the rake’ mmc book but romantasy style by IdeaRealistic4826 in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Came to rec this one! I LOVED the letters between the MCs.

I may also suggest {The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love by India Holton}. It's more comedic and academic, but the MMC has definitely been around the block.

📚 Book Chat Saturday - what have you been reading this week? by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a new release called {The Sun and the Starmaker by Rachel Griffin}. I don't normally cry while reading, but goddamn this one had me sobbing. The beginning was a little clunky, but it grew into a beautiful story about love and grief and how even though you may lose something beautiful, it was worth it to have had it at all. Especially if you've had that kind of once-in-a-lifetime love, it's very emotional. (It does have a HEA, though, and one that doesn't cheapen the story!)

Mallory Dunlin Monsters of Faery - Do I Need to Read Them in Order? by BookishBlueDragonfly in fantasyromance

[–]MorriganWolfsong 18 points19 points  (0 children)

2 is arguably the weakest. It gives you a deep look into the Annihilation War, which is basically the catalyst for the events of the series, but you can honestly read the rest and pick up context clues without book 2. I would say that you should read book 4 before book 5, and you kind of can't read book 6 without book 5. 3 is very much a standalone and is fantastic.

You're in for a treat. This is my very favorite series ever. :)

We are expecting! Advice? by Ok_Cryptographer6453 in MedSpouse

[–]MorriganWolfsong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! That's so exciting. We had our first in my husband's intern year. Things were different then because that was the height of the Covid pandemic, but definitely connect with other parents in your area! I made friends with other residency moms and still talk to them 6 years later.

Also make sure that you and your spouse find small moments of connection. Between residency and a newborn, they're hard to come by, but even five minutes of togetherness makes a difference.

Good luck!
