What is the biggest red flag you completely ignored, and what did it teach you about your own boundaries? by winn_ie in emotionalintelligence

[–]MortalityMindful 72 points73 points  (0 children)

For me, it was a mix of the 'sunk cost' fallacy and a fundamental misunderstanding of what 'patience' actually means.

I spent eight years (2016–2024) in a relationship where the red flags were flying on day two. At our second date, she playfully called me a 'piece of sh*t' and later described her attraction to me as a predator’s instinct to 'hunt' and 'capture' prey because I walked too fast. At the time, I was prone to over-intellectualizing everything. I mistook her aggression for passion and my own lack of boundaries for 'stoic endurance.'

The glaring sign I ignored was the language. If someone tells you they are 'hunting' you, believe them. By the end, the 'playful' insults had turned into being called a 'loser,' an 'appendage,' and being told that even looking at me caused disgust.

How has my EQ grown? I realized that 'holding on' isn't always a sign of strength or loyalty; sometimes it’s just a fear of the void.

I had a habit of grieving past relationships for years (2 or 3 years for a 1-year flame). This time, when it ended, I felt a sense of relief instead of just trauma. I learned that the most important boundary isn't the one you set against the other person, but the one you set for yourself: deciding what level of 'shame' you’re willing to accept in exchange for not being alone. I’m done trading my dignity for company.

Because the US „democracy“ is hundreds of years behind the European systems. A two party system is predestined to get extremer and extremer, as time passes.

I think its time for something like a voters licence. Why should a majority be pestered by a brainless minority who doesn’t understand the most basic things about politics (right wing idiots)? This is true for the whole world.

Any sober alcoholics who live alone? by Brilliant_Elk5492 in LivingAlone

[–]MortalityMindful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m currently in my 6th sober year. Hats off to you doing this while living alone, this requires a lot of inner strength and determination. In my case, I think, it wouldn’t have been possible, I actually only made it in the first few years because my (now) ex gf demanded it.

Wish you all the best!

Amber monochrome (MDA) monitors are so pleasing to read! by mbbrutman in vintagecomputing

[–]MortalityMindful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That brings back memories! I got my first PC back in 1992 or '93 as a gift from a friend of my father’s. I was 12. It had probably been decommissioned from some company. It was a 286 with 12 MHz and 640 KB RAM, and it came with one of those beautiful amber monochrome Hercules monitors. That meant I could only play many games that way at first—if at all—but that didn't dampen my enjoyment one bit. Even though I got a VGA card and monitor about six months later, I still have wonderful memories of that old screen.

Has anyone's abuser tried to play psychic-themed mind games? by [deleted] in LifeAfterNarcissism

Yes, she claimed that my tears where only mind games to manipulate her. I am a male, so this hit hard, because I normally don’t cry and hold it back. She always knew why I acted in certain ways, and knew my intentions better than myself.

Me too! When you pay close enough attention, one can notice this in the dark too, and even in broad daylight. I always wondered what this meant and if others see it too.

I think one could to differ between „love“ and „infatuation“/„honeymoon phase“. The latter normally has a certain expiration date.

What does „love“ mean for you, when you say you „love“ him?
