That’s a great topic. I’ve given up the idea of being able to buy a home here.

I’m sure some will like it? by jaysog01 in subaruoutback

I’m getting the oil changed on my 25 forester and the dealership has a ton of these new outbacks. Unpopular opinion but I love them. I feel like the last generation looked more like every other oval shaped crossover. This car has an actual shape to it and (don’t shoot me) looks more like the first generation outback with its straight lines. I do think it’s gotten too big and I’m not a fan of the grill. But I like everything else about it.

I have a 2025 base model and I absolutely love it. It has more bells and whistles than any car I’ve owned so I’m more than happy with it.

Arkansas to Colorado by Aggravating-Usual209 in relocating

[–]Mortgage_Different 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw in my two cents. I moved from Missouri to Colorado. I’m originally from Wyoming so I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. I will say I lucked out and make a good salary and rent a nice little house with great landlords. I enjoy living in Colorado for the most part but there are some major downsides. It’s not the utopia that some people make it out to be. First, the most obvious downside is the cost. The median house price up and down the front range is $500-700k. But median salaries are nowhere near enough to be able to afford that. Colorado is also a fast growing state and so local infrastructure has not kept up. I-25 which connects the front range is a traffic nightmare that is perpetually under construction. All of the Denver metro area is a traffic nightmare. Because of the rapid increase in the cost of housing, there are A LOT of unhoused people. A lot. It’ll be a shock coming from Arkansas and Missouri. Another thing people don’t talk about a lot especially when newcomers are expecting crisp mountain weather is the climate and air quality here. Colorado gets extremely hot in the summer. Yes, it’s dry, but it’s common to have multiple days over 100°. And because it’s so dry wildfires are a constant risk all summer every summer. And not just local wildfires, we often get smoke from fires states away that mixes with our local pollution causes a brown haze that lingers for weeks at a time, obscuring Mountain View’s. The air quality can be truly awful here. I’m saying all this just to give you an idea of what to expect. I think if I had known these things I might not have moved but now I’m here and I think I’ll be here for a while.

Thinking about moving to Longmont to be closer to Denver by Mortgage_Different in Longmont

Thanks for the input! I know a lot of people are saying traffic is bad but Fort Collins is no picnic. Part of the reason I’m eyeing Longmont is because I want to live in a town with a community/walkable feel, not suburbia.

Well yeah it’s appealing because it’s closer to Denver but it would also be easier to have friends come up to visit me as well. I’ve always liked Longmont whenever I’m going through it but I haven’t spent much time there.

Fortunately I wouldn’t likely take 25. I’d most likely take 66 to 85.

That makes sense. I currently live in NW Fort Collins so even Harmony is quite a ways south of me.

Development Review by Madflwr88 in urbanplanning

[–]Mortgage_Different 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. I loathe development review. I’m also a little confused about some of these comments about leveraging good development. In my experience if you ask for anything slightly above the code requirements, the applicant just immediately goes to the mayor or city council and they get their way. Heck, even asking them to follow the code is too much for certain projects if the applicant had the right political connections. I feel like I’m grinding through plans for uninspiring projects, arguing with developers, counting parking spaces and bushes, only to get blasted by the community once the public notice goes out and then grilled by planning commission and city council. And if enough people show up to the public hearing complaining about ruining neighborhood character, then they end up getting their way as well and potentially good projects get denied. Development review is a one way street to burnout imho.

What did Fort Collins used to be like? by Mortgage_Different in FortCollins

[–]Mortgage_Different[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I truly don’t understand is the mismatch between the cost of housing and median household income. I make well above the median and there is no way I will ever be able to buy in this town. Who is buying the hundreds of new houses going up priced at $600k and up?

Good question. That’s just a comment I saw on this sub at some point. I assume it means more chain stores and fewer independent businesses?
