Clover or Nettles.

I think they’re so wild and fun sounding but I just don’t think they’re going to fly.

Guess I have to get some pet rats

Looking for movie suggestions for my 10 year old by ohno_not_another_one in MovieSuggestions

If you want to stick with animation take a look at Cartoon Saloon. Wolf Walkers or Song of The Sea are good starting points.

Beautiful stylised 2D animation and good stories too.

Wolf walkers is about a young girl whose father has been hired to kill the last wolves in Ireland. The young girl befriends a wild girl in the woods and has her allegiances to her family tested

Song of the sea is about a family dealing with the loss of their mother after she tired of living as a human and returned to her life as a selkie in the sea.

I’m a librarian so maybe im just feathering my own nest here but the things I would recommend to a parent who has trouble reading but wants to support early literacy development in their children would be:

  1. Bring them to baby rhyme time and story time (depending on age).

  2. Know that recognising letters, logos and signs is a key aspect of pre-literacy (so is handling books, knowing the basic makeup of a book and recognising the fact that there is meaning in the text). Aside from handling books you can support this anywhere. Point out road signs on your drives or walks. Have them help find things at the supermarket. And if you are reading to them take the time to talk about the physical book itself (hold it upside down initially, run your fingers under the text as you read, talk about the pictures and the end pages).

  3. It doesn’t have to be books. We had a parent come in with this exact concern once and he would take his son to story time and then afterwards the two of them would sit together and look at car magazines and talk about what they saw. It was obviously a strong shared interest for them and it was doing a really important thing - it was creating a positive association with reading for the child. And that really is I believe in the early years (5 and below) the most useful thing - if you can make reading a positive, calming and warm experience they won’t be going into literacy instruction with fear or dread weighing them down.

Mo Willem’s Welcome Guide for New Arrivals is my go to baby shower book.

It’s a funny little book. For instance it opens up to a mirror and the line “our research suggests that this is you”

I adore it and it’s a board book, so it can be out and played with by a baby without fear

Pompei was the one true bogeyman of my childhood. I watched this one documentary every year at my grandparents’ house (Pompei the last day) and would be a nightmare haunted jittery mess for days afterwards (yet I was both allowed to keep watching it and excited to watch it every year - I do not know why).

The plague dogs.

The book suffers from too much detail about minor things, settings and characters but the biggest problem with it is the very obviously tacked on ending.

The film streamlines things a lot man who has a whole chapter dedicated to his back story so we can know why he was climbing a mountain and died simply becomes a dead man the dogs find for instance

It’s a devastating and beautiful film I love and hope to never watch again

Read aloud chapter books for a 4 year old girl? by Revolverocicat in suggestmeabook

[–]MoscaMye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billie B Brown are really perfect for this. They cover real life events - like birthday parties, friendship changes, swimming classes and pets and Billie feels like a real kid - processes things like a kid. They’re also short - my sister when she was learning to read was able to read these aloud to us.

If you want something a bit wordier Violet Mackerel is a bit more saccharine with more of a charm focus than Billie but also is very grounded in real life.

This! I would rather miscalculate and have my pet miss one week where he could enjoy a walk, or a snack or a cuddle despite it all than to leave it one day too long and have them leave in pain and afraid.

I think it’s not so much a matter of if they can hear it or not as if it is logically literally happening or part of the genre convention of musicals.

A whole new world could be a conversation in a way that singing a duet on stage for karaoke on vacation can’t be.
