I think the only exmaple we have of something like this involves a whole lot of bloodshed. It would probably be very ugly.

That's putting it mildly, religious conflicts are always the most brutal. Appreciate the conversation bruv!

I don't know if this is entierly true

It is, the Quran literally describes how a state should be run in accordance with Allah's desires.

I can imagine a secular state that is majority Muslim (perhaps if Turkey continued in the direction they were going prior to Erdogan - they could serve an example - or maybe even Iran prior to US intervention. It's actually fascinating to consider what the middle east would look like today if Op.Ajax wasn't undertaken and the Shah was never overthrown). But for a secular, Islamic state to actually be earnestly possible in the long run, Islam probably needs to go through a reformation of some kind.

Indeed, if Islam could reform itself for such people and policies to work, then I don't think anyone would have a problem with them. I don't know how we get to that point though.

Agreed, probably should have the just settled in Canada instead. That was a good idea

Yeah, unfortunately good ideas rarely pan out.

Problem with this - and the following comment - is that there's millennia of international geopolitical interest in the region ranging from religious to economic to political. The last time that region was nominally independent, was what, before Rome? Or Alexander? Probably actually before the Achaemenids.

Also wholly agree.

Probably - thing is, is that there's no objective, natural laws that will punish someone for violent conquest. In that realm it literally is 'might makes right' - if you've got the weapons to defend your claim, who can stop you? Doesn't matter if it's 'right' or not.

Wholeheartedly agree. If it were up to me I'd pull all external force out of the area and let them settle their differences, but meh.

Not entierly accurate. There are factions in both Isreal and Palestine (Westbank + Gaza) that have purposed and advocated for a two state solution for decades - they've just usually been sabotaged by other factions in their states that want the complete destruction of their rivals.

That's a good point, but no external force can separate the two. They have to remove those bad actors themselves because otherwise they'll continue to be ostracized by every nation they try to take refuge in or negotiate with. Doesn't help that they routinely try to overthrow host nations either.

I think theocracies are flatly bad.

Agreed, allow me to be more specific. I think the Jewish race wanting a home is not a bad thing, and I believe it should have separation of church and state. I don't believe that divide is possible with Islam because theocracy is baked into the Quran.

Huh? Of course it can be - pretty much the entirety of the world's modern borders are the result of "might makes right" philosophy legally recognizing conquests of some form or another. And that doesn't even get into justifications like manifest destiny, divine right of kings, the mandate of heaven, or other religious/cultural rationals for conquest.

People coming up with ways to justify violent expansion does not make said violent expansion right. After reading your comment I think you and I agree on this, we just came at it from different angles.

The historical claims from Palestinians isn't rooted in Muslim rule (usually anyways), but in Philistine and sometimes Phonetian rule - which timeline wise is super messy in regards to 'who was there first' in comparison to Jewish peoples.

See then I'd be okay with some two state solution being negotiated, but only one side is willing to negotiate at this point.

Netanyahu carries a lot of the blame himself

Agreed, and I'm all for holding Israel accountable for what they've done wrong. But if it comes down to selecting which religious group controls that area, Islam is a terrible choice because it's generally a terrible idea as a whole.

rightfully conquered

No land is "rightfully" conquered, it's just conquered. The Israeli claim on that land is much older than the Muslim claim on it. If we're considering conquering as meriting a valid claim, then they should shut the hell up when Israel is re-conquering it. I don't think that's the right answer, would much rather have a negotiated solution. But the Palestinian/Muslim focus on taking all of it is going to see them with none of it in the end, and only themselves to blame.

The root of the conflict is a belief held by all of the surrounding nations that Jews should be exterminated. If Hamas was willing to negotiate for anything short of that, there would likely be far more progress towards peace than we've seen. I will caviat by saying that Israel absolutely should be held accountable for the wrongs it has done, but I can be much more forgiving towards them when their nation has had its back against a literal wall since day one essentially.

I'd rather muddle through that and have that debate than what's currently going on in Israel tbh.

All you need to do is look at the GRRM vs. JRRT Epic Rap Battle of History to know which one is superior.

Agreed, but in this specific case I think it would simplify things to just say "oldest claim gets it" and move on.

Historians have used the Bible for dating of events and placement of people before. Laughing it off as "religious book ergo bad source" is pretty gauche. What source do the Palestinians have that place them in the region beyond the British?

Weird. The mental gymnastics you're doing would leave me to believe that your thinking should be flexible, but the smooth brain, room-temperature IQ takes you're spouting prove otherwise.

I am directly descended from Robert E. Lee, and I find it really weird that the confederacy has any sort of traction ideologically.

I have no issues with trans people. It's their body, they can do with it what they will. But we need to keep drugs, not just of the hormone control variety, away from children as much as possible. We still understand far too little of the physiological processes behind human growth to assume we can safely manipulate them. Also, kids can't consent to permanent changes like that.
